Opponent Summary: GW takes on Loyola University of Chicago on Wednesday afternoon in the first matchup of the 2024-25 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament. GW, with an identical conference record as the Ramblers, was awarded the 12th seed by virtue of a tie breaker. The two teams split the regular season series, with each team winning on their opponent’s home court. The Ramblers bring a balanced attack into this contest, with no player averaging double figures in scoring, but Naelle Bernard (9.8 ppg), Emma Theodorsson (9.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg), Jess Finney (7.2 ppg), Sitori Tanin (7.0 ppg. 4.2 rpg), Thoranna Kika Hodge-Carr (5.9 ppg), and Kira Chivers (5.6 ppg), are capable of big games. Bernard leads the perimeter attack, having hit on 55-147 3-point attempts for a 37.4% success rate.
GW’s leaders: Makayla Andrews (11.5 ppg), Gabby Reynolds (10.6 ppg), Paige Mott (7.6 ppg, 6.1 rpg), Sara Lewis (7.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg)

About the game: The conference opener pits two evenly matched squads with striking similarities. Beyond the statistics, both teams have struggled mightily to sustain consistent offenses, but both teams have from time to time risen to the occasion to secure victories. Loyola comes into the tournament having won their last two games (VCU and St. Louis) by the slimmest of margins. GW, after defeating Loyola in Chicago, lost four straight games before their season ending victory over URI. The defense will have to play 4 solid quarters and not let offensive lapses give the Ramblers any momentum. Offensively, the Revs need to focus on the inside game. In their victory over Loyola, Mott had a 16/12 double-double and GW went 19-24 from the free throw line to counter 32% overall shooting (only 2-19 from 3-point range) in that game. In his brief tenure as the interim coach, Novak has shortened the bench, relying on primarily seven players. This is not surprising, given Calisto’s recent inconsistent play and Sierra-Vargas’ difficulties in handling full court pressure. Sims has come off the bench to spark GW is the last few games, and Diala has played well enough to give Mott some much needed breaks. With the short bench in play, it’ll be important for the squad, especially Lewis, Mott, and Reynolds to stay out of foul trouble. This figures to be a tightly contested game that could be decided by who plays most effectively down the stretch.
From this point on, it’s win or go home.

WBB definitely played more inspired ball against UMass and URI. Really happy for the team that they were able to pull off an upset in Kingston the other day after what has been a tough year. They definitely have a shot against Loyola, but a potential rematch against Rhody in the next round doesn't feel like a good thing.

Final Result: GW extends season with 65-44 drubbing of Chicago Loyola.
Today’s starters: Andrews, Engel, Lewis, Mott and Reynolds. After an initial miss on a 3-pointer, GW went to their inside game and managed to forge an 8-4 lead at the 4:48 mark of the 1st quarter. GW continued to go inside after the break and was able to increase the lead to 15-8 going into the 2nd quarter. GW worked for a number of open 3-pointers, but couldn’t capitalize, finishing 0-6 in the opening quarter. Loyola was not much better, going only 1-9. To start the 2nd period, both teams struggled to score and at the 3:43 mark of the 2nd quarter, the score stood 20-13 in favor of GW. Things picked up for both teams, but once again, GW was able to take advantage on the inside and ended the half on top 27-18. Bernard led Loyola with 8 1st half points, while Andrews and Reynolds topped GW with 7 points each. GW’s missed opportunities were the story to start the second half, as missed 3-pointers or lay-ins let Loyola creep back into the game. At the 3:45 mark of the Loyola had cut the lead to 32-25. The Revs were able to rally in the final moments of the 3rd quarter, and thanks to a shooter-friendly bounce on Sim’s trey, GW extended to a 41-28 lead going into the final period. An 11-2 barrage by GW to start the 4th quarter forced a Loyola timeout and GW forged ahead 52-30 at the 6:26 mark. GW milked the clock for the remainder of the game, scored with regularity, and finished with a 65-44 win. Bernard led the Ramblers with 13 points. Andrews (14 points, 9 rebounds), Sims (13 points), and Reynolds (12 points) had big games for GW.
For the second consecutive game, the GW defense held their opponent to under 30% from the field and leveraged their inside offense to come away with a win. Despite hitting just 6-20 from beyond the arc, GW finished the game at 52% overall behind a 12-19 performance on layups, and punished Loyola inside with a 38-18 advantage in points-in-the-paint. Sparked by Calisto, Diala, and Sims, the Revs got a big boost from the bench, outscoring the Loyola subs 26-16. Engel has been on a shooting slump of late and finished 0-6 on the day, but hopefully she can break out of it in the next game. Loyola put on full court pressure but didn’t trap, so getting the ball across the timeline was not a problem. Props to the starters for playing under control. GW’s composure and patience in the half court has been greatly improved of late, so continued focus on the inside game is essential.
Next up is a Rhode Island team chomping at the bit to get another shot a GW. Will the Revs be ready?
