On Tuesday, the Revs face a Howard team coming off two big wins (against Providence and Florida A&M) to start the season. Following a successful 2024-25 WNIT season, the Bison are picked to finish 1st in the MEAC this year. Howard is a deep team with 11 players averaging at least 11.5 minutes per game, and with all 11 scoring better than 5.0 ppg. Their best players are Nile Miller and Zennia Thomas, both selected as preseason 1st team All-MEAC by the conference’s coaches. Look for the Bison to use their depth to push the pace and pressure the Revs out of their offensive rhythm.
Following a big loss to Temple, GW has some critical adjustments to make in order to make this a game. GW has to force Howard to play half-court offense and try to control the tempo. The transition defense has to improve. This can be facilitated by being deliberate on offense and rotating to proper defensive positions to deny the long outlet passes. At this point of the season, development will be incremental, so look for any improvements over the last outing. Look for bounce back games from James and Reynolds and continued assertive efforts from Lewis, Phiri, and Sims. Also, the availability of Calisto and Theodorsson could be an issue. Any updates on their status would be appreciated.
Howard will be a tough test, but playing at home against a local rival should only help. And hopefully, some shots will start to fall.

In a competitive contest, Howard slips by GW 62-60.
Despite the outcome, this was a good bounce back effort by GW. The game had some ups and downs, but overall, GW played well enough to out-shoot the Bison despite not finishing some good looks in the 1st half. Thanks to some one-sided officiating, Howard was able to build a 4 point 1st quarter lead behind a slew of free throws. GW came back from a 13 point deficit in the 2nd half, and took the lead briefly in the final quarter. A 3-pointer by GW to win the game went awry as the game ended.
The starters (Lewis, Sims, James, Phiri, and Becker) were not sharp as an offensive unit to begin the game, but Becker was all over the court defensively. As a result of early foul trouble, Coach G went deep into the bench and the substitutes responded with outstanding games. Reynolds, Wilson, and Calisto combined for 37 of the team’s 60 points. The team’s offensive movement and shot selection was generally good, and with the exception of a few unforced turnovers, they handled the press pretty well. The half court defense was solid, but there were a few too many breaches on the inside early in the game and ultimately, the difference in the game was that the Revs didn’t have an answer for Howard’s height, especially Thomas, who repeatedly took advantage of mismatches inside. To the Revs’ credit, they were able to hold the Bison to just 7 points in the 4th quarter, but also struggled to score, finishing with just 11 points.
Kudos to the coaching staff for preparing the team for this game. The adjustments made from the previous game were evident, and one could feel like this team is actually being coached. Although the final rotation is in flux, it appears Coach G has a lot of options as the team goes back on the road for a couple of tough games. Longwood will be a tough game.

Despite the 19 turnovers, I thought the team did a decent job breaking Howard's press. However, there was way too much isolation ball on offense and not enough passing/cutting. WBB got into the bonus with over five minutes left in the fourth quarter and did not get to the line again after picking up foul #5 on the Bison. Howard did play reasonably good defense inside and they have some length but that's evidence that GW was too jumper heavy. That's especially true given the scoring drought. It's crazy that neither team scored in the last three minutes, and both teams went nearly six minutes without a made field goal.
It was good to see Calisto back playing. I thought she gave good minutes. Reynolds had a nice stretch late as well to get GW back in it. Any news regarding the D2 transfer Nya Morris? Is it a long-term injury? When healthy, I'd imagine she provides a boost on offense.

Not a 100% sure, but I thought I heard a commentator say that Nya Morris would not be playing this season-- if true, that would be too bad.

The coach got valuable productive minutes from Wilson and Dulin. Those players helped to settle the ship and G=get GW back in the game. I also liked the move backed to the zone for a couple possessions--that helped the subs stop Howard as needed. GW also got valuable minutes off the bench for the front court players. It was a good team fight. Good for team development. .
