On Monday, GW travels down to central Virginia to take on the Longwood University Lancers of the Big South Conference. The Lancers are picked to finish 2nd in the Big South this year, after making a trip the WNIT last season, where they lost to a solid Duquesne squad 70-68. Longwood comes into this contest at 3-1, but in an unusual circumstance, two of there wins have come against DIII level teams by a margin of 80+ points in each game. In DI action, they easily defeated Western Kentucky 80-42 on their home court, but lost to Navy in Annapolis 74-66. Like Howard, Longwood has a long bench, and will use their depth to push the pace against GW. Because of their DIII contests, the current stats aren’t meaningful, but two preseason All Big South selections-- Amor Harris and Malea Brown, are probably their best players.
GW should approach this game much like the Howard contest and push Longwood to play the half court game. The backcourt, particularly Reynolds, Wilson, and Dulin have shown improvement, and for James, it’s just a matter of time. The wings (Sims, Phiri, and Lewis) have been steady, but Lewis has to stay out of foul trouble. Calisto gave the Revs a big lift off the bench, which was a plus. The front court (Loving, Becker, Theodorsson, Gonzalez) does not look fully integrated into the offense and although Becker has been a demon on defense, her offense needs more development. Hopefully more games can help to remedy this and identify our go-to front court player.
For Farmville, VA., Longwood U is the only game in town. At last Friday’s tilt with Bluefield (an NAIA team), the Lancers drew over 2400 fans, roughly 1/3 the population of the entire town. No doubt who those fans will rooting for. This will be a true road test for the Revs. And Georgetown is up next, on Friday.

I very much appreciate the care you put into this and your other wbb posts. With the men's team off to a great start, its easy for some to ignore the rebuilding and baby steps happening on the wbb side. However, it is my hope that these next several games offer the team some clarity on their strengths as they enter league play. I was fortunate to be at Geedubs in the 90's when the girls team was the gold standard under McKeowen. While I live in NYC, I truly am excited to welcome Coach Joe home this season, albeit remotely.
Maybe there can be some retiring of numbers on the wbb side as well to honor the long trajectory of excellence.

It's gonna take some time. While it's tough watching the team not be able to break a press and see every D1 team they play have more skill, I'm sure this will improve with time. Coach G's later teams at Colgate were good at taking care of the ball and shot it well from 3.
Unfortunately, this season will probably be a bit of a hangover from the McCombs years. There's not a whole lot of positives, but I do think the shot selection is better when the ball got to the halfcourt and that is promising. I like what Calisto was bringing in the first half. The current team just cannot make the shots even when the looks are good. I'll admit I overreacted after the D2 game. The shooting may indeed be rough as I suspected in the offseason and need a roster turnover next year to inject more skill.

Women lost 62-71, but came back from a 22 (or 23) point deficit. Keep the growth up ladies.

GW is unable to overcome 22-point deficit at the half and falls to Longwood 71-62.
GW succumbed to the Lancer’s full court pressure in the first half. The Revs were guilty of over dribbling, making bad passing choices, and then, rushing shots after breaking the press. With each GW turnover (17 in the 1st half), Longwood gained more confidence offensively. With 19 points coming off the turnovers, Longwood was able to double up the Revs 44-22 at the half time break.
The second half was a completely different story. Despite the continued full court pressure for the final 20 minutes of the game, GW had figured out the press and was able to cut the lead to just 7 points with a little over 5 minutes to go. From that point, the teams traded baskets until a Lancer parade to the foul line in the last 2 minutes gave them some breathing room. For the second straight game, GW out shot their opponent, but failed to win the game. The free throw differential (20-26 for Longwood and just 6-11 for GW) was a significant factor.
For GW, everyone played better in the second half. The shop selection was better and the shots began to fall. The half court defense forced a lot of Lancer attempts with the shot clock winding down, and although GW as able to win the 2nd half handily (40-27), it wasn’t enough. Theodorsson (13/10 double-double) was particularly good in the 2nd half. Phiri (11 pts), Sims (10 pts) and Becker (9 pts and 4 stls) were solid. Reynolds did not suit up for the game.
Kudos to the coaching staff for the adjustments made at the half. Dulin shared the PG slot with Wilson and both did a nice job. Georgetown is up next, so the schedule doesn’t get easier, but yet another opportunity to get better.
