GW @ the Cayman Islands

On Friday, GW WBB takes their turn in the Cayman Islands, with a Friday contest against Miami University, followed by a Saturday tilt versus UNC Charlotte.

The Miami University Hurricanes of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) were picked to finish 8th out of 18 teams in the Power 4 (P4) conference. They come into the tournament with a 4-1 record that includes an 8-point victory over Davidson of the A10. Their only loss came at the hands of 11th ranked Iowa 64-61 last Saturday. Miami will dominate the inside, especially 6’6” center Ra Shaya Kyle, who leads the team in scoring and rebounding (15. ppg, 8.2 rpg). Kyle will get ample support from Gal Raviv (11.4 ppg, 4.6 apg), and Amarachi Kimpson (10.6 ppg).

GW faces a talented squad with a big size advantage. The contest will require the young Revs to demonstrate their composure to prevent the game from getting out of hand early. Reynolds (10 ppg) and Sims (10.3) continue to lead the way for GW, but will face a tough Miami defensive front court. Becker’s hustle continues to provide a spark. Defensively, GW has to limit the inside scoring. The Hurricanes are only shooting 25% from 3-point range, so the Revs will have to double team Kyle on the inside and hope Miami doesn’t get hot from outside. Progress has been steady, albeit slow, for this year’s squad, but if the team can come out of this game with a greater sense of confidence, that would be a positive.

The Charlotte 49ers of the American Conference come into the tournament with a 4-3 record and a Friday contest against nationally ranked Oklahoma State. The 49ers are picked to finish tenth in a good mid-major conference (remember Temple?). While a notch below Miami with respect to talent, they are battle-tested, with all three of their losses coming at the hands of P4 programs (Auburn, LSU, and Cal). Charlotte has struggled from the field, shooting only 34% as a team, but they rebound well (18.4 offensive rebounds per game) and force over 17 turnovers a game. Princess Anderson (15.7 ppg) is their scoring leader, followed by Zoe Best (8.7 ppg).

GW has an opportunity here, but the outcomes from both Friday games may have both physical and mental effects on the players. All things equal, the Revs will have to take care of the ball and box out on the boards. If the Revs can limit the second chance points and points-off-turnovers by the 49ers, they’ll put themselves in a position to win.

Re: GW @ the Cayman Islands

GW falters in OT, loses to Miami 83-77.

GW’s best overall performance of the year was quashed in the first few minutes of OT, but out of a loss came a lot of positives. Reynolds continued to play big, with 27 points, and James demonstrated why the coaching staff is so high on her on-court leadership. She consistently broke the press and finished with 12 points and 4 assists. GW also got big contributions from Theodorsson (14 pts) and Loving (9 pts, 9 rebs). In the end, Miami wore the Revs down, especially Kyle (26 pts, 14 boards) and Raviv (29 points). Some costly errors by GW to start the OT let Miami build an 8 point lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Lewis and Sims fouled out at the start of the OT trying to guard Kyle. When she wasn’t scoring a field goal (8-11), she was getting fouled and hitting at the free throw line (10-15). GW really came out on the short end of the officiating, with Miami going the FT line 40 times, to just 14 attempts for GW.

In an earlier game, Charlotte lost a tough battle 74-65 to 24th ranked Oklahoma State. Both teams will be looking to salvage the Cayman trip with a win tomorrow.

Re: GW @ the Cayman Islands

Caught the tail end of the 4th quarter. Sucks we couldn’t pull it out in regulation. Miami was missing a bunch of FTs. Good to see us put the fight to a power conference school. Gives me hope that we at least have enough talent to compete in conference play.

Re: GW @ the Cayman Islands

GW captures big win, defeating Charlotte 81-67 in the Cayman Island Classic.

For the second straight game, GW’s trio of Reynolds, James, and Theodorsson led the way as the Revs battled a taller stronger 49ers squad to come away with the win. Reynolds finished with 18 point, followed by 14 from Theodorsson and 12 from James. Lewis also finished with 12 points. GW led throughout the game, but Charlotte managed to get within a single point before Theodorsson went on an 8-0 run to boost the lead for good. GW finished shooting 54% for the game and out rebounded the 49ers 37-35 thanks in part to Loving’s 9 rebounds. GW’s smaller squad had trouble containing Charlotte inside the lane in the early part of the game, but Loving’s interior defense helped force the 49ers to go to their outside game.

GW’s improvement over the last 3 games has been stark. For the most part, the half court offense has been fluid and efficient. The Revs have shot a combined 47% from the field (38.6% from beyond the arc), in winning 2 out of 3 games. Reynolds has averaged 21 ppg in that span. James, who seemed restrained in her early outings, has a new found confidence that has ignited the rest of the team-- and Theodorsson is showing off her all around game.
If the rest of the rotation continues to meld with these three, the team’s outlook will improve a great deal.

The Dayton Flyers come to DC next Wednesday for GW’s initial A10 contest. There will be a lot to be learned from that game.

Re: GW @ the Cayman Islands

I really appreciate the report xAC! Wasn't able to catch the Miami game but did watch a replay of the Charlotte one (with terrible quality, ugh FloHoops is the worst). If the team can continue to take care of the ball and contest the perimeter, they can certainly have a lot of success moving forward.

Liked the fact that Caia Loving is playing more minutes - the team needs her size down low for rebounding. If Mia James can continue to break the press like that, she is going to be a key piece. Her shot is very consistent when she can get it off. Everyone plays an important role on the team. Gabby as the leader, Sara as a nice complement as a slasher, and Kamari can stretch the floor and made some unreal passes. It's a further boost if Emma can shoot like she did against Charlotte. Becker continues to shine defensively and brings great energy. Wilson has good size and handles as the starting guard. The team will continue to have ups and downs but I'm impressed that Coach G has shown improvement so quickly after a tough start to the year. Playing a tough schedule will serve them well come conference play (which I guess starts Wednesday for some reason?)

Also I didn't see this until now, but apparently Nya Robertson (now at Tennessee) made 10 threes against Coppin last week, a Vol record. Good for her - when she's on she can be deadly from behind the arc.
