In keeping with the A10’s recent scheduling regimen, the Revs will interrupt their OOC schedule to take on the Dayton Flyers on Wednesday evening at the Smith Center. This is the first of two meetings between the conference foes, with a later contest to be played in Dayton in February. The Flyers were picked to finish 5th in the conference, and come into this game on the heels of a big last-second win over Kansas at the Elevance Health Tip-Off Tournament this past weekend. At 5-3 overall, Dayton’s record also includes wins over Xavier and Canisius, and loses to Butler and Illinois State. Nayo Lear leads the Flyers, coming into the game with a 16.6 ppg scoring average. Dayton is strong up front, as well, with 6’3” Center Fatima Ibrahim posting an impressive 11.0 ppg and 8 rpg stat line.
GW’s recent resurgence at the Cayman Islands gives way to some optimism moving forward. All the players seemed to be less tentative and deliberate, leading to a pair of good offensive showings. Reynolds is emerging as a consistent scoring threat, and James has taken control of the offense when the ball is in her hands. Other players are stepping up, giving Coach G great balance in scoring and increased confidence in her rotations. GW’s vulnerabilities, however, are still very apparent. Even though they were able for the most part to beat the pressure defenses, there were periods of time when players momentarily lost their focus and made unforced errors with weak passes or careless ball handling. There were also several occasions where the guards dribbled into traps, and had to be bailed out by Coach G’s time outs. Unnecessary turnovers have to be reduced. Also, the Revs’ smallish front court had difficulty containing strong front court players on the inside, resulting in layups, second chance points, or fouls for the opposition. Loving was a big help, but depth in this area will continue to be an issue this season. Statistically, Dayton and GW are very similar. Both have been efficient offensively when they don’t turn the ball over. Both play solid half court defense. With Ibrahim, Dayton has an edge on the inside, but the Flyers have turned the ball over even more than GW, so if the Revs can capitalize, things may even out.
This game will be a great test for both teams. Winning at Dayton later in the season will be tough, so this matchup is important for GW. A good showing will bolster the Revs’ confidence with Brown coming in on Saturday.

Really impressed by the defense tonight, especially in the post. Theodorsson shined on that front in the first quarter, and Becker was as usual a standout on that end. The shots didn't fall, but that happens sometimes. Reynolds is en fuego right now and Lewis did the little things really well down low. Also I thought James should have had a block but they didn't count it. I didn't expect Coach G to get in on the dancing after the game lol. It was also cool to see the men's team come out to support, including chiming in on the airball calls. Excited to see the team continue to grow!

GW slogs their way to 54-42 victory over Dayton and 1st A10 conference win.
On a day when only Reynolds seemed to have a shooting touch, the Revs were able to hold off any Dayton runs to secure the win. Neither team was sharp to start of the game, but the Revs were able to ride the hot hand of Reynolds, who finished with 14 points in the 1st half, and take a 29-19 lead into the halftime break. GW was able to maintain the lead for the rest of the game, making numerous defensive stops, while holding the league leading Flyers to 34% shooting from the field and just 3-15 from beyond the arc. Nayo Lear, who came into the game among the A10’s scoring leaders, was shutout, getting only 3 attempts at the basket, and committed 7 turnovers. Reynolds finished the game with 19 points and 7 boards, and Lewis had a good all-round game for GW, finishing with a 12/13 double-double. Dayton controlled the inside with a 28-20 advantage inside the paint, but GW countered by doubling up Dayton with a 16-8 edge on points-off-turnovers.
Thanks to the defense, GW was able to overcome a poor shooting day (GW finished at 36% for the game). Outside of Reynolds, no one else had a good shooting day, despite getting numerous open looks. The offense was both good and bad, but the players kept their composure and played confidently throughout the game. Despite having “off” offensive nights, the other team members (Wilson, Theodorsson, Becker, Sims, James) all made a big scoring play at a critical time during the game. Interior defense and unforced turnovers are still vulnerabilities, but with each game, the team seems to gain more confidence. This was an important win for Coach G, and the entire team-- and our first win over Dayton in a while.
A pretty good Brown University squad visits on Saturday. The Revs will have to play their best to make it a contest. Getting to 5-5 would be a major accomplishment for this team.

I didn't see both sides of the court, but what a pathetic crowd. Was the weather a factor? Congrats to the women for beating an A10 foe. I'm hoping for a good feeling season, unlike the recent past.

The official ESPN tally for the game was 511, which seems to be consistent with the other home games: Howard: 501; Morgan State: 476. I guess that today's students just aren't in to sports.
