GW versus Brown University Game

The Brown University Bears of the Ivy League visit GW on Saturday afternoon. GW’s last encounter with an Ivy League team came in a 2019-2020 season loss to Princeton. Brown, picked to finish 5th in the Ivies, comes into the game at 6-3. Their record includes victories over Bucknell, Boston University, and UMBC; and loses to Belmont, Holy Cross, and Lehigh. The Bears are led by Forward Alyssa Moreland, who comes into the contest scoring 13.8 ppg on 54% from the field, while pulling down a league-leading 9.9 rpg. Grace Arnolie is the Bears’ leading scorer, coming into this game with a 17.0 ppg average.

GW is steadily improving. They are coming off a game where the offense was not sharp, but the defense was stout. Defensively, GW has to make Brown earn their points by keeping Moreland off the offensive glass, limiting the number of attempts by Arnolie, and keeping the Bears off the free throw line. Offensively, since Brown does not have the all around height of our previous 3 opponents, look for the Revs to try and take advantage on the inside and not settle for treys. GW’s rotation players are getting familiar with their roles and have refrained from forcing things, which has helped the offense to be more effective. Reynolds is becoming a reliable primary scorer and the other rotation players (Lewis, Sims, Theodorsson, James) have collectively made major scoring contributions, but getting a consistent second scorer from that group would be extremely valuable. Becker and Wilson are great complements, and Loving has been extremely effective in her minutes so far. Phiri is still trying to fit in, but look for her to get comfortable in her role and have some big games as the season progresses. Getting to .500 after such a rocky start would be a big boost for this young squad.

Following this contest is another tough road test for GW at Delaware on Wednesday.

Re: GW versus Brown University Game

After horrendous start, GW makes huge comeback to claim 53-48 win.

Things could not have started worse for GW. After hitting just going 1-23 from the field to start the game and digging themselves into a deep hole, the Revs gradually clawed their way back into the game. The Bears’ defense opened the game daring GW to take 3-pointers, and GW obliged by missing their first 13 tries. In the meantime, Brown rode a hot hand by Arnolie (16 1st half points) to take a double digit lead into the halftime break. In the 2nd half, GW’s defense took over, holding the Bears to just 19 points, while the offense manufactured enough points for GW to come out on top. Once again, Reynolds led the way (20 points), providing much needed scoring while the defense went to work. Other Revs made critical scores, including a pair of triples by Theodorsson (10 points) that helped put GW on top in the 4th quarter. Not a pretty game, but a big win, helping GW to even their record at 5-5.

The Revs bench, although less than effective offensively, carried the same defensive intensity into the game as the starters, helping to keep the Bears within striking distance throughout. The Brown defense forced a lot of early out-of-rhythm 3-point shots by GW that seemed rushed. Only a strong finish helped to raise GW’s overall shooting efficiency to 30% by game’s end, but the Revs were only 14% (3-21) from beyond the arc. This was the second straight subpar shooting performance by the Revs (Lewis 2-8; James 1-9; Phiri 1-6). Giving up only 8 turnovers and getting 19 offensive rebounds were a huge boost, but GW still missed too many put backs and lost opportunities for second chance points. The game should probably not have been this closely contested, and once again, the defense helped overcome the offensive shortfalls. Better teams will not let us off the hook so easily.

A midweek contest at Delaware is up next for the Revs. The Blue Hens will be looking to avenge last year's opening season loss to GW.

Re: GW versus Brown University Game

Continue to be impressed by the fight from this team. There will be times where the team just does not have the players to compete against really good teams, but Coach G has WBB finding ways to win which is great to see this early.

Theodorsson has been playing at a really high level the past couple of games. She's making shots from all over the floor, but I'm even more impressed by her defense in the post. It's no secret that this team doesn't have the height up front to hang against really good teams, but against a team like Brown (who I think is on GW's level) the team's ability to hang tough down low has made the difference. Reynolds had better shot selection after halftime. Lewis played really good defense against Arnolie. Sims did a great job doing a bit of everything, especially in the first half to keep the team afloat. While James did not have a great shooting day, she makes winning plays when it matters most and that's important for a team. As xAC mentioned, the eight turnovers was also a really positive sign.

James is a really confident jump shooter, and has been taking good shots. When the shots start dropping, she's going to be a force.
