GW versus Richmond Game

The Richmond Spiders visit the Smith Center on Wednesday evening to play GW in the only regular season meeting between the two squads. The Spiders were picked to win the A10 regular season title. After winning 11 straight A10 games following an early season loss to URI, Richmond was stymied by George Mason on Monday, losing 46-37 on the Patriot’s home court, in a game where they were unable to score more than 11 points in any quarter. Richmond, now tied for 2nd place in the A10, dropped to 12-2 in conference play and 22-5 overall. GW is coming off consecutive subpar performances and is looking to turns things around in anticipation of the A10 tournament. Richmond is loaded with talent, including preseason POY selection Maggie Doogan (21.9 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 4 apg), and Rachel Ullstrom (15.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg) was also selected to the preseason All A10 1st Team. Alley Sweeney (10.6 ppg and 4.4 apg) was selected to the All A10 2nd Team. All three players are shooting over 46% from the field and over 42% from beyond the arc. As a team, Richmond scores at a 73.7 ppg clip, while yielding just 59.8 ppg.

A10 scheduling turned out to be unkind for GW, who has to play the conference’s 3 best teams in the last 4 games. Perhaps the Richmond vs. George Mason game film will provide some insight towards GW’s defensive game plan, but the Spiders will be looking to atone for their embarrassing loss on Monday, so look for them to be fired up. Regardless, at this point, GW’s final W/L record is less important, as 2025-26 was always going to be a transition year. Playing talented teams like Richmond, George Mason, and URI will allow the coaching staff to assess the current roster in order to prioritize their off-season recruitment. In the most recent games, Lewis and Reynolds have started to play more one-on-one, and it has effected the team’s overall performance. The Revs do well when Sims is involved in the offense, with Becker, who has not scored more than a single basket in the last 3 games, a main benefactor. Wilson has also come on strong of late, making good decisions and showing her physicality on drives to the basket, while Theodorsson seems to be pressing. The Revs need to focus their game and try to re-establish the mid-season chemistry that led to some of their better performances.

After this game, the short trip to Fairfax for the 2nd matchup of the season with George Mason on Saturday.

Re: GW versus Richmond Game

Richmond loses to GMU in a defensive dominated game. A GMU 9 point run at the beginning of Q3 proved to be the difference. Richmond blew out GMU at the beginning of Q3 in their home game, The loss drops Richmond into a 2-way tie for 2nd place with GMU - but they must face Rhode Island a 2nd time - while GMU does not.

GWU will need an all-around complete game to win this. Low scoring; great D, controlling rebounding and preventing second shots and hitting any easy shots.

Another reason to hate the A-10's unbalanced  scheduling!!!

Re: GW versus Richmond Game

Wow! Big time win!! Kudos to the team for fighting back when it looked like Richmond had pulled away in the fourth. This team never gives up and the defense was great. Perhaps this game gives the team some momentum going into this very tough final stretch.

Re: GW versus Richmond Game

I believe Theodorsson is just 1 rebound short of 1000.  She is already over 1000 pts.

Re: GW versus Richmond Game

GW stuns Richmond, takes 57-54 victory in OT.

The game was a fierce defensive battle for three quarters, with GW holding the Spiders to just 9 points in each period. In the 1st half, GW held Richmond to just 8-27 from the field (2-15 from beyond the arc), but was only able to carve out a 22-18 lead. Ullstrom led Richmond with 5 points, while Reynolds tallied 9 points to lead GW. The 3rd quarter went much the same as the first two, and GW led 36-27 going into the final period. In a battle where GW held a lead for three quarters, the Spiders came alive in the 4th to go ahead by a 47-40 margin with 2:48 left in the game. Doogan dominated with 11 4th quarter points to lead the charge, but the Revs were able to close out the 4th quarter on a 9-2 run. The GW defense took over, and clutch scores by Reynolds helped GW knot the score at 49-all. GW was able to win the OT 8-5 with critical scores from Reynolds, Lewis, and James to seal the victory. Doogan finished with 14 points before fouling out in OT to lead Richmond, and Sweeney added 11 points. Reynolds, with 22 points, was GW’s only double figure scorer, but timely scores were made by everyone else.

Coming back after giving up the lead in the 4th quarter was a huge. After being ahead for most of the game, GW’s inability to get the ball in bounds on multiple occasions gave Richmond new life and allowed them to score 22 points in the final period and take the lead. Thankfully, the GW squad was able keep their composure in the final moments to come back to tie the score and force OT. They carried their momentum into the overtime to get a big win. Reynolds played a great game and was a consistent scoring threat throughout. As she was overplayed by the Spiders defense, the other Revs (Lewis 9 points, Sims 8 points, James 7 points, Theodorsson 5 points, Dulin 2 points, Wilson 2 points, and Becker 2 points) all seemed to score when it mattered. Ultimately, it came down to the defense, and holding the best offensive team in the A10 to just 49 points in regulation was the Revs'  best defensive effort of the season. And today, their offense was just good enough to manufacture an upset win. Happy locker room tonight.

Things don’t get easier, as George Mason is up next-- and they are tough to beat in their house.
