GW versus Bradley University WNIT (Round1)

GW received a WNIT bid, and so the season continues. The Revs will host the Bradley Braves of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) in Round 1 on March 19th at 6 PM (ET). Bradley finished tied with the 3rd best record in the MVC regular season, but suffered a one-point loss (74-73) to Northern Iowa in the MVC Championships. They had notable wins against the likes of DePaul and South Dakota, as well as Power 4 losses to Missouri and Nebraska.

Bradley Braves: 13-7 in the MVC and 20-12 overall.
Leading Scorers: Kaylen Nelson (18.1 ppg), Maya Foz (14.3 ppg), Tamia Perryman (8.7 ppg)
Leading Rebounders: Amy O)’Hara (5.8 rpg), Ellie McDermid (5.7 rpg)
Assists Leaders: Mya Wardle (3.5 apg), Foz (2.2 apg)
Key Bench Players: O’Hara (6.3 ppg)
Team Offense: 70.0 ppg; 41.1% Field Goal Accuracy (34.6% on 3-pointers); 13.3 Turnovers per game; Assist-to-Turnover Ratio 1.0
Team Defense: 64.2 ppg; 37.3 rpg; 14.6 Forced Turnovers per game

George Washington Revolutionaries: 7-11 in the A10 and 15-17 overall
Leading Scorers: Gabby Reynolds (13.9 ppg), Sara Lewis (10.7 ppg), Kamari Sims (8.0 ppg)
Leading Rebounders: Lewis (5.7 rpg), Tannah Becker 4.5 rpg), Reynolds (4.2 rpg)
Assists Leaders: Sims (2.2 apg), James (2.0 apg)
Key Bench Players: Emma Theodorsson (7.3 ppg), Jaeda Wilson (5.7 ppg)
Team Offense: 60.8 ppg; 41.2% Field Goal Accuracy (31% on 3-pointers); 15.9 Turnovers per game; Assist-to-Turnover Ratio 0.7
Team Defense: 60.8 ppg; 34.8 rpg; 13.7 Forced Turnovers per game

This game will challenge the Revs on both sides of the court. Bradley is highly reliant on their perimeter game, especially Nelson, who has hit 40% of her 220 3-point attempts. Three other Braves also have over 100 attempts each, and as a team, Bradley is hitting 34.6% of their triples. The GW defense will have to turn in a Richmond-like performance to keep the game within range. On the other end, Reynolds and Lewis need to have productive games, and hopefully Theodorsson is available to provide some additional bench depth and scoring. GW’s offense has to win the points-in-the paint battle by a healthy margin to come away with a victory. They also have to avoid careless turnovers and not allow the Braves to score easy fast break points. Win or lose, this game will be a great experience for next year’s returning players.

If GW can pull off a win, a match up against Southern Indiana awaits them in Round 2.

Fantastic defensive effort tonight! Love how hard this team plays. Congrats to Coach G and team. Let's forget that final offensive play happened though lol. I can't believe #4 on Bradley is only a freshman. Really good player.

Re: GW versus Bradley University WNIT (Round1)

GW extends season with 63-60 victory over Bradley.

After overcoming some early offensive difficulties, GW came alive in the 2nd half to overtake Bradley and secure a last second win. The Braves came out on fire, hitting 5 of their first 6 3-point attempts to get out to an early lead. Meanwhile, GW’s slow start (3-16 from the field) was aided by some timely trips to the free throw line that kept them within striking distance at 19-13 to end the 1st quarter. The Revs started the 2nd quarter fast and took over the lead at 25-21, but the offense again sputtered, and Bradley closed the quarter with an 11-0 run to take a 32-25 lead into the break. Foz had 15 points, followed by 9 points from Nelson for Bradley. Despite a slow start, Reynolds had 8 points to lead the Revs. Bradley built the lead to double figures in the 3rd quarter, before Reynolds’ pair of treys brought the Revs to within 3 points going into the final period. In the 4th quarter, SIms took over, beating the Braves on the inside or finding open teammates for easy scores. The Braves’ last ditch attempt fell short, and the Revs’ season continues. The duo of Nelson and Foz lived up to their billings— Nelson finished with 21 points and Foz followed with 20 points. For GW, Reynolds had a 21/12 double-double, and Sims finished with12 points and 3 assists.

Bradley was scary coming out of the gate, hitting 5 very long 3-pointers with ease. Coach G made a critical defensive change, forcing the Bradley perimeter players to drive to the basket instead of letting them loft up 3’s, and from that point on, the two teams played each other evenly. The GW defense had some trouble with Bradley’s size, but all in all, the GW D played great. Theordorsson was again unavailable, but Wilson and Dulin both played key roles, to help give GW a 14-6 edge in bench scoring. GW was also able to offset the Braves’ outside game with a dominant 34-16 advantage in points-in-the-paint. The team showed great poise, even when they went down by double figures in the 3rd quarter. It was another gutsy performance by the young GW squad.

The next WNIT opponent will be Southern Indiana. Stay tuned.

Couldn't make it in person tonight but my daughters and I really enjoyed watching the comeback and strong defensive possessions at the end.  Great win!
