GW @ Illinois State University WNIT (Round 4)

GW will visit the Illinois State Redbirds of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) in a Great 8 match up of the WNIT on March 30 at 6:30 PM (ET). The Ramblers finished 3rd in the MVC regular season and lost to 10th-seeded Evansville in the semi-finals of the conference championships. The Redbirds posted 3 victories against A10 opponents this season, having beaten Dayton, Loyola Chicago, and Saint Louis in their OOC schedule. They also defeated Bradley, GW’s Round 1 WNIT opponent, twice in conference play. Wins over University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and Abilene Christian in the WNIT booked their slot in the Great 8.

Illinois State Redbirds: 13-7 in the MVC and 22-13 overall.
Leading Scorers: Doneelah Washington (17.1 ppg), Addison Martin (12.4 ppg), Trista Fayta (11.8 ppg)

Team Defense: 60.7 ppg; 35 rpg; 13.8 Forced Turnovers per game

Illinois State provides GW’s biggest challenge yet in the WNIT. Not only are the Redbirds 16-1 on their home court, but they have been successful against a number of other A10 opponents this season. This contest will feature a battle between Southern Illinois’ potent offense and GW’s stout defense. The Revs’ defense will have to limit a trio of players who can score and rebound, and who are also adept at playmaking. In the WNIT, Washington has averaged 22 ppg and 6 rpg, while Martin has added 10.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg and Fayta has dished out 6 apg. On offense, the Revs must run their deliberate offense, without careless turnovers, to create good shot opportunities. Lewis and Reynolds are capable of big games, but they’ll need help from others to counter the Redbirds’ balanced attack. Sims can be a consistent threat, but any additional scoring from Wilson, Becker, or James will help. Once again, the bench will have to provide effective support in their minutes to allow the starters to rest. Dulin, Loving, and Calisto have provided solid minutes defensively and need to continue to do so. And neither Lewis or Reynolds can afford to get into foul trouble. This is a great opportunity for both teams, but only one can come out on top.

To the winner, a trip to the WNIT Fab 4.

Great preview!  Looking forward to the game tonight and hoping the squad can keep up their momentum.  Also really enjoying learning the name of each NIT Round - Super 16, Great 8, Fab 4, etc.

Re: GW @ Illinois State University WNIT (Round 4)

Thought the team played well, but ran out of gas at the end. Not unexpected given the tight turnaround and having to go on the road. Sara being in foul trouble early on didn't help. I didn't realize that Illinois State has made the WNIT 17 times (that's gotta be the most of any teams in the field), and made the semis last year as well. If both coaches were in year 1, I definitely would have given the edge to GW.

Excited to see what the team looks like going into next year. It goes without saying that the team needs a paint presence and a bit more perimeter shooting. No doubt the team is in good hands under Coach G.

Thanks again xAC for the previews all season!

Re: GW @ Illinois State University WNIT (Round 4)

GW’s WNIT run ends with 61-53 loss to Illinois State.

This was a physical defensive battle all the way through, but Illinois State, mainly on the strength of their size, was able to overtake the Revs in the 3rd quarter and sustain the lead till the end. GW, who battled to take a 12-11 lead after the 1st quarter, was hampered by the loss of Lewis just 3 minutes into the game after her second foul. She did not return in the half. That put the scoring burden on Reynolds, who delivered with 10 1st half points to lead the Revs to a 27-26 halftime lead. Sims chipped in 6 points for GW. Washington and Fayta had 6 points each for the Redbirds. A 12-0 run midway through the 3rd quarter put the Redbirds in charge with a lead that they would not relinquish. Martin (15 points) and Washington (13 points) dominated inside for the Redbirds, giving them a 32-18 advantage in scoring in the paint. Fayta, who finished with 13 points and 7 assists, was another big factor in Illinois State’s win. Sims had a big second half for GW, and finished with 17 points. Lewis and Reynolds finished 13 and 12 points respectively.

Both teams played extremely hard, but the Redbirds bench was longer and GW was gassed by the end of the game. Coach G did a great job late in the season considering the lack of scoring punch coming off the bench, but she managed to find right combinations to get the starters the rest they needed to finish these last few games. Reynolds didn’t score a field goal in the 2nd half, but she had to play all 40 minutes today, and the Redbird defense did a good job of limiting her opportunities. Lewis was 13/7 despite not playing for 17 minutes in the 1st half and fouling out in the 4th quarter. She was mugged numerous times today, but somehow, she managed to foul out. And it was great to see Sims step up today and make a number of clutch plays. The Revolutionaries finished the season at 18-18 with 3 postseason wins, something that was totally unexpected, which by definition means they exceeded expectations. With Lewis, Reynolds, and Sims coming back for next season, and the potential of the younger players, the future of GW WBB looks promising. Especially if Coach G can land some front court size and talent.

The season officially ends for GW WBB. For those of you who have done so, your acknowledgments are appreciated. Is it just me, or does it seem like it's going to be a long wait before the 2026-27 season gets underway?
