So this didn't used to be allowed on the Herve site...hoping the rules here are more lax
I'm having trouble following the transfer thread, have been focused on other things since they cancelled the season. Can someone give a breakdown of what the "depth chart" might look like if there were no moves after Mezie and the Vandy guy?

Unless there’s more movement, Jameer and Shaun Walker are the only ball handlers (unless Lincoln Ball is more of a point guard than I expect), and either showed ready for that full time role this year. Jameer is a crazy athlete, but needs to improve his handle if he’s going to be the primary ball handler.
So PGs are Jameer and Walker
Wings would be: Jack, Battle, Seymour, Amir Harris (if he’s healthy enough to play), Lincoln Ball, Tyler Brelesford, Matthew Moyer.
Bigs would be Chase Paar, Noel Brown, Hunter Dean (with dean more of a shooter with height), and I guess Javy Langarica (though he’s not really a big or a wing).
With that roster construction, I remain puzzled by the Moyer signing, but JC has given me no reason not to trust his judgment yet.

Day 1, who plays point?

Why not Amir?

I would add Amir Harris and Tyler Brelsford to the list of ball handlers. Harris was backing up Armel when healthy (and even starting when Potter was hurt) and can definitely play the point some. Lincoln Ball and Tyler Brelsford averaged 4.4 and 5 assists per game in their HS senior campaigns respectively. Ball strikes me as more of a combo guard type who is more of a 2 than a pure PG, but he can handle the ball in emergency situations. Brelsford played point some at MSJ, and has experience in a competitive HS circuit.
JC has definitely started assembling a roster of guys who can play multiple positions. PG definitely seems like a worry though. We are not short of ball-handlers, but each carry question marks which is the bigger problem. Without Amir healthy, those question marks get bigger.
All signs seem to point to JNJ starting at PG to begin the year. He showed improvement over the course of the year, but still has a ways to go. Shawn had some bright moments as well, but needs to add a lot of muscle this offseason to compete in the A10.
I'll say PG depth chart is something like: JNJ, Harris, Walker, Brelsford (I could see him jump Walker at some point), Ball
Most of the minutes along the wing will go to Jack (might see some time at SG), Seymour, and Battle (might see some minutes at the 4). Maybe to a lesser extent Moyer, if he proves to be a much better three point shooter than shown so far in college. Moyer might prove to be the best defender of the 4 when it comes to laterally staying with the opposing wing on drives to the hoop.
Up front will be Paar, Brown, Dean, Moyer (probably plays the 4 some), Stallings, and Langarica.
Hope one of the bigs (probably not Noel or Ace) emerge as a stretch big that can step out and shoot it. That was a missing dimension from the offense last year and will allow us to space the floor more. One thing is for sure, the number of dunks from our bigs is sure to go up this year. Hunter, Noel, and Matthew definitely appear more athletic/explosive than what we've had recently.
With Moyer committing, I'd say maybe the starting lineup becomes JNJ-Maceo-Jamison-Matthew-Chase now, with Sloan the microwave sixth man off the bench.

I would not count Amir or Javy in the picture next year for different reasons. But that's just me based on an informed guess. But we will have to wait and see. If someone else commits you know someone else is definitely leaving.

Does Amir have the handle to run point?
he's got the size for it and court vision is pretty legit

If Amir is healthy, then yes, I think he runs the point a lot. I was assuming he won’t be healthy. Sad for the kid, and a huge blow to GW, but i think we have to assume he’s not healthy.
Not sure about Moyer’s lateral quickness. Per a fiend who is a huge Vandy fan, one of the knocks on him was that he’s slow (at least, that was my Vandy friend’s perception).

GWRising, based on your post, is it safe to conclude that if they do not return, it will be due to health reasons for Amir and basketball performance reasons for Javier? These are the unfortunate logical conclusions should this end up being the case but wanted to see if this is consistent based on whatever information you've received.

With enough focused practice and game simulation, I think Jameer will run the point extremely well for us. He's got all the tools to do a great job.

Makes complete sense that we can't count on Amir. Sadly, too many health problems. And we know Javier has basketball problems. I doubt we see either of them next season. Didn't JC think Jameer was our point guard at the beginning of last season. We know that didn't work. If JC plans on Jameer as our point guard next season, let's hope Jameer really puts in the work in the off season. Jameer has a ton of talent. I just hope we see it if he plays point guard. I was expecting a grad transfer point guard.

I too was expecting a transfer PG to work with Amir. Don't think JNJ is the answer this year, just way too many TOs and sloppy passes last year.

Keep in mind that it's a very long off season and that Jamion Christian was once a point guard himself. Former point guards Karl Hobbs and Mike Lonergan did amazing jobs coaching up Carl Elliott and Joe Mcdonald respectively from their freshmen to sophomore seasons. JC is hoping for similar results with JNJ.
Let's not also forget about Jameer Nelson Sr. This can be a great thing as long as everyone is on the same page. The potential problems take place when JC wants one thing and JNS is suggesting another. Hopefully, this is a non-issue.
The three things that I feel JNJ must improve upon to become an effective point guard:
1) He can't make up his mind what he's going to do before he does it. This includes things like taking the ball to the hole against double teams or getting caught in the air, unsure what to do with the ball, because the move you initially committed to make was stifled by the defense. More effective decision-making, specifically involving when to shoot and when to pass, will help reduce the turnovers.
2) He must resist playing "hero ball." JNJ was guilty of this far more earlier in the season than later on, so hopefully he does not regress in this area. Since the point guard often has the ball in his hands, there is a tendency to try to get the job done yourself at the detriment of not involving your teammates.
3) He must improve his perimeter shooting. Specifically, his three point shooting. In fact, after watching Armel struggle a bit from 3 this season, it would not surprise me if JC wanted more of a three point threat running the offense. Ball and Brelsford have been advertised as possibilities, but JNJ can really help his own cause by shooting hundreds of three pointers daily this off season. (Am wondering if our guys are even allowed to enter a gym and shoot baskets right now. Hopefully, the Nelson's have an indoor court in their house.)

Sort of. In Amir's case health concerns may prevent him from playing next season (but maybe not in the future) so it is not a case of him not returning to GW but likely not playing in 2020-21. So he will likely take a scholarship but may not be able to play. Javy may depend on what happens with other prospective roster additions - transfers and possible freshman recruits. He could stay or go depending on how he and JC perceive the opportunity to play next year and the options available to GW. Not sure but he also may be able to graduate by Summer. Think this will likely be a decision that will be made jointly between Javy and JC at a later date as circumstances warrant.

I think it’s his handle that needs the most work. Decision making was more typical of a freshman, but on the handle, he got stripped way too often. His spin moves often resulted in getting stripped and while he has a potentially lethal crossover, he often lost control of the ball while making his moves. I love the guy and think he’s a future first team all league talent, but I think his inexperience manifested itself most often in shaky ball handling in traffic.

Free Quebec is on the mark; I have high hoops for Jameer as well, though he probably wont be a great 3 point shooter. He has a great attitude and two super coaches (JC and his dad!) Hopefully, Amir Harris will be able to play next year.

Great point FQ.

I expect he's at home working with his dad on his handle and decision making. Perhaps one of the few players who can get great teaching at home. I hope everyone at home stays well. I hope all of the GW world stays as well as possible.
Anyone else concerned that this tragedy may go into the new school year? Trump's doing his best to extend it for as long as possible.

I agree with all your sentiments until you got to the political part. I would suggest we leave politics off this board. Or take it to off-topic. There are plenty of other places to vent politically.
