GW Softball

Earlier today, GW took a doubleheader from Hampton in a couple of closely played contests.

After a brutal start against a tough OOC schedule, we entered A10 play at 6-10. Since then, we've reeled off 13 consecutive wins, and are 9-0 in the conference. GW is favored to win the A10, so there's a good chance we can make it to the NCAAs for the second straight year. This a nice start for the new coach in the post- Jenna Cone era. Sierra Lang is once again dominating in the circle, and Alexa Williams, who is batting in the Jenna Cone slot, is having a big year so far, leading the A10 in RBIs.

This weekend we play Dayton 3 times (Saturday doubleheader and single game on Sunday). The doubleheader is being streamed on ESPN+.

Re: GW Softball

Since our winning streak was snapped, we've gone 9-2, with both losses by one run.

Following today's win versus Mount St. Mary's, GW sits at 28-12 overall and 16-2 in the A10 heading into a critical weekend to play 3 games against 2nd place St. Louis at home.

The Billikens can make up some ground this weekend as they sit 12-5 in the A10 and have been playing well of late. Next weekend, we close out the season with 3 games at UMASS. A few wins over the next two weekends and we can wrap up the A10 regular season title and enter the postseason tournament on a high note.

Re: GW Softball

GW swept 3 games from UMass this weekend.  Sierra Lange won 2 games giving up a single hit and 0 runs combined.  GW ends its regular season at 33-13 and as Russianthisle pointed out regular season champs.  Hope for the best in the tournament.

Re: GW Softball

As BC noted, Sierra Lange ciosed out the regular season in style with a no-hitter against the Minutewomen, after winning an 8 inning pitcher's duel yesterday.  Lange had a lead off double in the 5th to start a 5 (correction, 4) run inning that broke open a tight 2 - 0 game.  She finishes 24 - 7 with a .356 batting average.  With my usual GW and mid-major bias, I believe she deserves Honorable Mention All American status.
UMass is 12 - 12 in A10, tied with Mason, but holds the head to head tie breaker, so the host Patriots miss the tourney, if the A10 website is up to date.
I spoke with Volunteer Assistant Coach Avon Meacham briefly after the game, and he is optimistic for the post season.

Re: GW Softball

The A10 Championship is a double elimination. If GW loses to Fordham, they play a second game tomorrow and can get to the finals by winning the second game. Fordham, likewise, can also get to the final even if they lose to GW because it would only be their first loss.

Re: GW Softball

Fordham 1, GW 0,  Each team had only 3 hits.  Fordham had 2 doubles in the top of the 3rd for their run.  Alexa Williams doubled for GW's only extra base hit.  Base runners were scarce.
GW plays winner of Dayton/St Joes at about 5 pm, and must win in order to face Fordham again tomorrow.  And would have to beat Rams twice to win the tournament.

Re: GW Softball

GW beats Dayton 8 - 0 in 6 innings, with a 2 run Alexa Williams homer starting the scoring.  A 6th inning rally lead to the mercy rule being invoked and saving Sierra Lange from pitching the 7th.  Although GW might have put in a reliever with that lead.
Saturday's first game starts at 10:30 due to expected bad weather later, with second game, if needed to follow immediately.  Hope the Colonial bats stay hot.

Re: GW Softball

GW holds off Fordham 6 - 3 in morning game to set up the final game between the 2 top seeds, which should start about 1:15 or so.  Alexa Williams started the scoring again,  in the third, with a long 2-run single to center.  Ponce followed with a sac fly and Eslick added an rbi single.
Sierra Lange struggled at times the mound but was clutch enough for the win.  Fordham was almost flawless in the field yesterday but had a couple of infield bobbles today.  GW benefited from a foul ball call on a potential grand slam by Fordham.  I ,of course, believe the call was correct from my tv angle.   Fordham disagreed.
Weather has held off so far.  Apparently some mist attires.  In 2019, Fordham advanced to the NCAA over GW as the final game(s) were wiped out by rain, as the #1 seed despite being in the loser's bracket.  This year GW is the #1 seed and is now even with Fordham in the tournament after starting the day in the loser's bracket.  Colonials should get the bid in event of a rain-out.
Hope they get to decide it on the field.  GW and Lange must be tired.  Go Colonials.

Re: GW Softball

Alas, GW loses the finale 3-6.  I have no idea if they'll receive an at -large bid.  Still an excellent season.  If only the men's basketball team could do so well next year.

Re: GW Softball

Kansas 4, GW 3.
Jayhawks held by Sierra Lange to single runs in 4th and 6th, and then had a 2-run homer with 2 outs in top of the 7th.  A homer that proved to be decisive.
GW's only hit before the 7th was from Hannah Eslick in the 4th.  In bottom of the 7th, Maddie Spell singled and Lange reached on an error.  Alexa Williams hit a 3-run homer with 2 outs, but Kansas held on.
GW next plays on Monday against top seed Virginia or Bowling Green.
Kansas is now 17 - 34, with a 3 - 15 regular season record in tough Big 12.  They had a 6 - 2 win over Fordham in February.  Rams lost their NCAA tournament opener.

Re: GW Softball

Bowling Green 5, GW 3.  Colonials finish 36-17.  Disappointing finish but still a terrific season.  Thanks to the seniors for their careers.

Re: GW Softball

Tough way to finish but nonetheless another great season for the softball team. At times we were a bit shaky on the base paths/had some problems laying down bunts but for the most part this team did everything exceptionally well. Several seniors on the team should end up in the athletics hall of fame and will definitely be missed. It's going to be interesting to see what the pitching rotation will look like next year with only Spell returning. Sierra Lange was unbelievable in her time here (honestly thought she deserved A10 PoY even though Alexa Williams was also fantastic), but hopefully we have the confidence to turn to a second arm when we need to in the future.

I think we return roughly half of the starting lineup so that should help going into next year. The incoming recruits look promising as well. I'm a bit surprised Fordham has been the dominant softball team in the league the past decade or so. Their pitching was pretty good this year but otherwise they didn't really blow me away. Is the A10 considered a low major league for baseball/softball? I'm curious what the league record is in the College World Series because it seems teams don't fare that well OOC in general.
