Opponent Summary: The Fordham Rams host the GW Revolutionaries at Rose Hill Gym in the Bronx in a rare 11 AM tipoff on Wednesday. This is the first of two meetings between the teams this season. After upsetting Richmond earlier this week and then dispatching Duquesne in a squeaker on the road, the Rams are on a roll. Their OOC record included wins against the likes of Yale, Siena, and Stony Brook and losses to Seton Hall, Xavier, and the University of California (currently ranked #20 nationally). Fordham is led by Taylor Donaldson, a preseason All-A10 1st Team selection who currently stands second in the A10 in scoring with an 18.3 ppg average. Detroit Mercy graduate transfer, Irene Murua, also comes in at double figures with a 12.4 ppg average and 6.8 rpg. Chae Harris (8.0 ppg) is another player capable of having a big game. As a team, the Rams score 63.5 ppg, while allowing 61.3 points to their opponents. They shoot 41.1% from the field (28.3% from 3-point range) and have an assist-to-turnover ratio of .7.
About the Game: After losing a close game to Loyola, GW faces a Fordham squad that was picked to finish 9th in the A10, tied with Loyola Chicago. Although the overall talent level of the two opponents appears to be comparable, Fordham will present different challenges from Loyola. The GW defense has to focus primarily on the 3 players (Donaldson, Murua, and Harris) who take 55% of the Rams’ field goal attempts. Murua is an inside threat and is very efficient, hitting on 57.1% of her attempts, while Donaldson and Harris combine to take 65% of Fordham’s 3-pointers. Offensively, GW has to get back to the passing game they displayed against La Salle to get more assisted baskets and to minimize their reliance on one-on-one play with the shot clock winding down. Fordham is a confident squad, having withstood a very good Richmond team at home, and then going down to the wire to defeat Duquesne on the road. Conversely, GW has played poorly in the last 5 minutes of close games, which is an issue that has to be fixed. Coaching aside, no GW Rev has stepped up to demonstrate on-court leadership in crucial situations. Keep an eye out for who finishes for GW in a close game.
GW is only 2-8 versus Fordham in the last 10 games and has not won at Rose Hill since the 2008-2009 season. Are the Revs up to the challenge?

Let's hope we can get back on track. Otherwise talk on McCombs seat will continue. The lack of progress over the last few years is unacceptable at this point

Final Result: GW loses on the road to Fordham 61-53.
The starting lineup for today: Andrews, Engel, Lewis, Matthews, and Mott. Both teams competed evenly to start the game with GW doing a good job against the Fordham press. GW led 8-7 at the 4:59 media timeout. After the timeout, both defenses stiffened, and GW, who was more successful offensively, used a key 3-pointer by Engel to take a 15-9 lead into the 2nd quarter. GW’s defense continued to excel, extending a Rams scoring drought to 8.5 minutes, but the offense could only manage to extend the lead to 19-11 at the halfway point of the quarter. GW continued to struggle on offense as Donaldson began to find her rhythm for Fordham. Careless ball handling by Andrews as GW was trying for a final shot resulted in a turnover and easy layup, and the Rams cut the lead to just 24-22 going into halftime. Engel and Mott led GW with 6 points each. Donaldson had 8 points for Fordham. Both teams shot under 30% for the half, but Fordham was able to take 9 more attempts than the Revs. GW started the 2nd half with a lid on the basket and could not buy a basket. Fordham took a 31-27 lead into the media timeout at 5:00. GW recovered offensively to go back ahead, but a horrendous call and subsequent technical foul resulted in 5 free throws for Fordham as they regained the lead at 41-37 going into the final period. Still reeling from the 3rd quarter events, GW quickly lost more ground to the Rams, and trailed 53-43 at the 3:29m mark. The lead was too big for the Revs to overcome as they fell to Fordham 61-53. Mott led the way for GW with 12 points and 9 rebounds, and Reynolds added a team-high 14 points coming off the bench. For Fordham, Donaldson led the way with 16 points, while Harris chipped in 14 important points.
There is no question that officiating helped to determine the outcome of this game. With .8 seconds left in the 3rd quarter, a non-existent foul called on Andrews (her 4th) led to a subsequent T that became her 5th, and she had to sit her out for the remainder of the game. Officiating aside, GW’s glaring offensive deficiencies overshadowed the good defensive effort that held Fordham to 36% shooting from the field. GW shot only 30.6% and was just 1-11 from beyond the arc. But to think that GW still had a chance to win this game despite 21 turnovers and just 7 assists, while allowing Fordham to shoot 7-14 on 3-pointers is remarkable. Rebounding and points-in-the-paint continue to be GW’s strong suits, but they have to find a way to get easier scores. Too much dribbling equals trouble for this squad, as Andrews and Reynolds are both average ball handlers at best. And so much dribbling on the outside makes no sense. Lewis has been prone to traveling violations, and on most occasions, bad things happen when GW players drive the baseline. This team plays hard, but not smart. There seems to be no change of strategy or style of play for different game situations, and a leader on the floor has yet to emerge. This was definitely a game GW probably could have won.
Next up, Duquesne comes to DC for a Saturday contest. This looks like another winnable game.

According to Bart Torvik, WBB currently has zero wins against teams from the top 200 of CBB. The Fordham game was always going to be tough on the road, but I once again saw things that shouldn't happen.
I've said this a few times this season, but clock management at the end of quarters is pitiful. At what point will WBB learn this? This has to be third time it's happened this season. A shot should not be taken until the final shot clock of a quarter has been run down, otherwise you're giving the other team enough time to get a score. Unfortunately for GW that's has actually burned them (going back to Coppin State) yet McCombs hasn't taught the team to not do this. This is basic basketball. Fortunately in the first quarter, Fordham missed 2 FTs but those opportunities should never have been given to begin with. It's even more confusing given how slowly this team plays otherwise. The one time they should definitely be playing slow they don't.
I agree with xAC that the technical foul was ridiculous. I rarely say this, but that ref was beyond soft. The original foul call was already a bad one, but I did not see anything enough that warranted that T. Of course, a 52% free throw shooter would make five in a row against GW.
Fordham didn't even have to try for most of the game. They could simply wake up in the fourth quarter, press GW into making poor decisions possession after possession and then recapture the lead. WBB drives towards the sidelines which again is not what you want to do when trying to beat a press. At least two turnovers came along the sidelines. xAC says it best: the team plays hard, but not smart. Low basketball IQ is apparent.
Leadership is definitely an issue. Andrews makes freshmen like mistakes on the floor. You can guarantee she will have the ball taken away from her at least once every game resulting in a fastbreak chance for the other team. Looks like barring another injury Sims has lost her place in the rotation, although that's always completely up in the air under McCombs.
Offensively, the team never passes, takes bad shots, and can't make FTs or 3s either. Defensively, it was a better effort but I watch every opponent successfully press GW, yet WBB can never do that - especially when they are trailing.
Moving forward, one off good performances is possible but this team is simply too flawed and the coaching has been subpar at best. Question for all - what's been the best win of the McCombs era? I'm guessing it would have come in the Mia/Jayla year.
