The CC GW Turnaround

With a top 75 KenPom, a 150 spot leap in a few years, and a deep and talented roster in place has the full GW turnaround arrived?

Not accurate.  I know we beat Grambling by 52 in Yuta’s freshman season.  Didn’t look farther back than that.

Not that either. We best Stonehill by 45 two years ago (Garrett had 21 in his first game - so wasnt even our biggest win under CC).

We also beat Delaware St 94-50 in 13.  Beat UMBC 94-51 in 09.  Beat Kennesaw St 87-42 in 05.

I could have missed some, but at best it’s the 6th biggest if he century.

It was a huge win, but no need to make stats up wiithout figuring out if they are accurate.

Re: The CC GW Turnaround

Its strange to me that GW seems to be on a 10 year cycle, with a great team approximately every 10 years:

1994: Sweet 16
2006: Undefeated A10 regular season, #6 ranking
2015: NIT Championship
2025: ?

It will be fun to see what this team can accomplish to add to the list. And hopefully Caputo sticks around for a while so we don’t have to wait until 2035 for the next one.

Re: The CC GW Turnaround

My ESPN app said there were 2100 and change people at the game. We are playing great but what do we have to do to put people in the seats?

We have had an excellent team in the middle of each the last 4 decades, true!

1993-2007 most of that entire stretch was very good teams, but things did peak for the most part circa each of the last 4 decades, here's to hoping this is actually just the start and not the peak!

It isn't just GW basketball. after COVID, people have changed how they spend their time. In addition, the state of GW Basketball has soured a large number of grads. It is nice to see a few recent grads here. It looks like we may have lost a decade or so of students as a result of the state of the team leading to Caputo's hiring.   IMHO

Re: The CC GW Turnaround

GW KenPom is now 66

The Program was 226 at the end of 2022 when Chris took over the reigns, a 160 leap and climbing

One can only hope that we see improved attendance when we enter late-season A-10 play. But honestly, from the student perspective, it's not gonna happen unless the larger student body starts to understand the importance of games like SLU and Dayton; these aren't big names unless you understand mid-major basketball. The Georgetown game was the most electric atmosphere we've seen in the Smith in a while, and we can only hope a close game with Florida might get more students on board.

Re: The CC GW Turnaround

This is both a pre-Covid problem as well as a post-Lonergan problem.  It's also an age-old problem.

Even in Jarvis's heyday, even during a 26-1 regular season under Hobbs, the Smith Center has never consistently sold out.  A few games would, and others might fall in the 3,500-4,300 range, which I know is a far cry from what we've been seeing for many years now.

All you can do about students is attempt the outreach.  But by and large, I'm not convinced that we'd sell out the student section if we were winning games but we don't because we aren't (over the last decade).  I think you have a large number of students who simply have zero interest and will likely never have any interest.  If you made the argument that there should still be enough students out there that could be potentially interested, I would not argue that logic.  However, the fact is we never see consistent sellouts making it hard to buy this.

As for the public, we don't do much and therefore, we don't get much.  You have to spend money to make money, and all that good stuff.
