The St. Louis (SLU) Billikens visit the Smith Center on Wednesday evening. SLU was projected to finish 9th in the A10 and has exceeded expectations. After a so-so 6-7 OOC, they come into this contest at 5-4 in the A10, tied for 5th place. Their only significant win in the OOC was a 70-67 victory over SMU at the Music City Classic. In the A10, the Billikens have claimed victories over St. Bonaventure, Duquesne, La Salle, Dayton, and Fordham. This past weekend, the Billikens suffered a double-digit loss to Loyola Chicago in St. Louis. SLU features a balanced scoring attack, with four starters averaging double figures, and the fifth, Zhykera Brown coming in at 9.0. Alexia Nelson (13.5 ppg and 3 apg) leads the way, followed by Zya Nugent (13.2 ppg and 6.8 rpg) and Jahda Denis (12.3 ppg). 6’6” freshman center Alyssa Koerkenmeier scores at a 10.8 ppg clip, while shooting 58% from the field and pulling down 8.5 rebounds a game, which ranks 2nd in the A10. SLU scores 69 ppg while yielding 67.2 ppg and ranks 2nd in the A10 in rebounding at 40 rpg.
SLU’s balanced scoring attack will pose a challenge to the Revs’ defense, especially if Lewis remains sidelined. Inside the paint, where the Billikens have a significant size advantage, Sims and Loving will have to contain Koerkenmeier and keep her off the offensive glass. Although not particularly strong from the perimeter, where SLU shoots just 28.7% from 3-point range, the potent backcourt has been effective inside the arc. In the past few games, Coach G has employed the press more frequently and we may see that in this game, as the Billikens are prone to turning the ball over. On the offensive side, the Revs’ need to establish their inside presence and not be dissuaded by Koerkenmeier, whose 55 shot blocks leads the A10. If Lewis is out, scoring points will more be challenging, but the other team members, especially Reynolds, Sims, and Theodorsson will have to rise to the occasion. Positive bench production will also be critical. If the Revs can pull it off, this would be a significant win for GW.
After this, GW travels to Dayton for the first of three straight road games.

What a comeback win! Silvia Gonzalez coming out of nowhere to hit some huge shots. Gabby and Sara making big plays late. Big threes from Kamari. Tanah even had the confidence to take and make a jumper! I was a bit confused by the substitutions in the last couple minutes before halftime but I guess Coach G wanted to keep the starters fresh. Love that the team continues to fight although we'll forget that the last 30 seconds or so happened lol.

GW rallies past St., Louis to secure 64-62 win.
Trailing by 7 points late in the 4th quarter, GW closed with a 10-1 run to edge the Billikens 64-62. After the 1st quarter, St. Louis led for most of the way, behind Koerkenmeier, who had her way inside, and finished with a game-high 19 points on 8-11 shooting. When she wasn’t scoring, she was dishing out dimes to cutting teammates for easy scores. SLU also got a big game from Nugent, who scored most of her 16 points inside the paint. Despite having 4 fouls, Reynolds was key in the comeback, and finished with 14 points to lead the Revs. Lewis had 13 points and 8 boards for GW, and Sims added 10 points. The bench was also effective, outscoring the Billikens’ subs 19-4. Sylvia Gonzales was huge for GW, hitting a critical 3-point shot, but more importantly, containing Koerkenmeier in the final moments of the game. On the last play of the game, GW failed to get the ball inbounds and SLU had one last chance. Fortunately, their shot did not drop.
This was a big win for GW. GW started out well, winning the 1st quarter 17-12. Then for long stretches of the game, the Revs had no answer for Koerkenmeier. When she got position inside, she was impossible to stop. Credit Sims, Loving and Gonzales for playing physical defense against Koerkenmeier to at least slow her down. In the 1st half, GW missed a lot of easy inside attempts, which helped turn the lead over to the Billikens. But despite falling behind, GW maintained their focus, played shutdown defense and made the most of their scoring opportunities late in the game. GW’s leaders-- Lewis, Sims, and Reynolds all kept their composure and delivered key plays down the stretch. As usual, Becker was all over the court, and in a rarity, hit a critical jump shot inside the lane. The GW defense held SLU to just 2-10 on 3-point attempts. The Revs connected on 6-16, and this was the difference in the game. Happy locker room tonight in DC.
GW heads to Ohio, for a weekend rematch with the Dayton Flyers. Should be a good game.

what is it with both the men and women's teams and inbounding at the end of the game? At least a little revenge for the men's loss. Thanks DMV and xAC.
