Alumni Updates

I thought I'd start a thread for reporting the progress on some of our favorite and notable alumni. Unfortunately, the first bit of news is not good.

Patricio Garino: Yesterday in the EuroLeague match-up between Baskonia and Zenit, Pato was fouled hard and twisted his knee. He left the court and went directly to a hospital where his injury was diagnosed as a torn anterior cruciate ligament.  The injury will require surgery and a long rehabilitation period. A shame, because Pato was just one game removed from a career best 24 points, and getting significant minutes in the Baskonia rotation.

Tyler Cavanaugh: This comes on the heels of Tyler's misfortune (previously reported in another thread), ligament damage to his right ankle (out for 2-3 months), just when he was adjusting to EuroLeauge play and getting good minutes.

Yuta Watanabe: On the bright side, Yuta's Memphis Hustle has jumped out of the gates in the G league. His 6-0 team is so talented, that his 15.2 ppg average (on 50%+ shooting), is only 4th best on his team. He has scored 22 and 24 points respectively in his last two games. Yesterday's game include 4 great dunks:

Re: Alumni Updates

I hope the injury does not keep Pato out of Tokyo 2020.

Re: Alumni Updates

Speaking of alums, UMasshole grad Ricky Harris comes to (my) town tomorrow for a game. I vaguely remember him, but this was when GW was going to consecutive NCAA´s and UMassholes were middling so he was not a major concern of mine. Anyone have clearer recolection of his game?

Looks like Kevin Larsen and Paul Jorgensen are actually teammates in Spain: https://www.proballers.com/basketball/team/1562/palencia/2019

Re: Alumni Updates

Yuta faced off against compatriot Rui tonight. Yuta and the Grizzlies prevalied 128-111 against Rui and the Wizards. Yuta played seven minutes, and had a +/- of +8. He missed his lone shot attempt, but pulled down three rebounds.

Watanabe has appeared in four games this season. In November, he had 4 points and a rebound in 3 minutes against Dallas. In the past week and a half, he missed a shot in 4 minutes against the Bulls, and went 1-2 from the field in four minutes against Utah, with a stat line of 3 points, 1 rebound, and a block in 4 minutes.

Here was a pregame exchange between the two: https://twitter.com/washwizardsjp/status/1205993064080297984

Re: Alumni Updates

Teammates didn't get the ball to Yuta. But good to see him on TV and he played some when the game was within 1 in the first half, it looks like.
Yuta and Roi traded jerseys in the handshake line, at least for a picture.

Re: Alumni Updates

I watched the game and liked how much the Wizards announcers mentioned Yuta. Drew Gooden was very complimentary and noted how impressive Yuta's play was during the summer league. It also sounded like the Memphis crowd gave Yuta a big hand when he entered the game.

Re: Alumni Updates

The NBA's League Pass is free until Thursday or Friday, so you can watch any NBA game on the schedule. Memphis hosts the Miami Heat tonight at 8 eastern. The games are also available on nba.com.

Re: Alumni Updates

So if you checked out the Grizzlies last night, you'll notice Yuta wasn't there. Grizzlies seemed healed up, so Yuta went back to the G League. In today's win, Yuta played 24 minutes and had 24 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. He was 8-12 from the field (4-6 on 3 pointers). Memphis Hustle are now 14-1.

This Friday, Yuta will be the Las Vegas Showcase, an event that's closed to the public, and open to professional scouts, etc. Memphis is the #1 seed and will play 4th seeded Grand Rapids. If they win, they could play Wisconsin on Sunday (the other one loss G League team), and it would be their only meeting this year. Both games will be on one of the ESPN channels.

If Memphis can win both games at the showcase, the team would split a $100,000 prize. More details below:

Re: Alumni Updates

Looks like a middle of the pack team in Spain's premier league. Hopefully he gets a starting role, it sounds like the German game and style of play was hard to adjust to.

Re: Alumni Updates

Worst case scenario, he still gets to live in the Canary Islands. Not bad!

Re: Alumni Updates

I will hide this bit of info under this thread because it doesn't deserve it's own thread.

Several of us on this site are GW Law alums. The nut case who is accused of killing the federal judge's son in New Jersey then off'ing himself is a GW Law alum. As if Michael Avenatti hasn't brought us enough bad publicity the past couple years!

I've seen several news accounts about this tragic story, and nobody has mentioned Roy Den Hollander being a GW Law alum, so you shouldn't feel too much shame. The judge's son was a sophomore or junior(and maybe baseball player too) at Catholic University.

With the NBA season starting back up very soon, does anyone know if Yuta will be playing for the Memphis Grizzlies?

I'm like 99% sure I saw Yuta is at Orlando bubble.

Re: Alumni Updates

Nice going Pato.  Among his new teammates include Stephen F Austin's Thomas Walkup who shot West Virginia out of the tournament a few years ago and Wisconsin's Nigel Hayes who helped lead the Badgers to consecutive Final 4 appearances.  That's a nice nucleus of players without counting any of the talented Lithuanians on the roster.

Re: Alumni Updates

Per Yuta:

Grizzlies facility three days ago. That being said, G's are currently listing 17 players on the roster, but not clear who is actually participating and who will be active.

Re: Alumni Updates

Memphis is currently playing the 76ers in an exhibition game and Yuta is listed on the roster, so it looks like he's on the team as they look to qualify for the playoffs. Memphis swingman Justice Winslow suffered a season-ending injury during a practice a few days ago, Yuta could be in store for some good minutes off the bench with J.Winslow out.
