GW Men's Hoops » Saint Peter's To The Elite 8 » 3/25/2022 9:16 pm |
Ok Mayhem, yes, probably a little exuberant. Being in NJ we are all caught up in the Madness.
Although I’d definitely vote for tonight’s win over Purdue to be the second greatest upset in the modern era of the NCAA tournament. This was truly shocking. I thought they’d get blown out tonight. Purdue had four days to prepare for them. First 15 seed to ever make the Elite 8.
Three NCAA wins in one season! I’m so jealous! Remember when we had three tourney wins in two years? And then unfortunately one in the last 28 years.

I think so Dude. And Princeton vs Georgetown the greatest near upset in the 64 team era.

To a lesser degree, really making me relive that magic we all felt during the Sweet 16 run in 1993, when suddenly every average joe on the West Coast knew who GW was.

I was born and raised around the corner from St. Peter’s and lived in that neighborhood through 8th grade. So proud and happy for them.
And all of a sudden everyone in the country knows St. Peter’s. Their applications will be way up next year locally, and their social channels are way up. Winning basketball is way better than any marketing or advertising the school could ever do.

I agree with both FQ and Funger on this. The A-10 is deep, but also very flat. Definitely not one of the worst years for the conference performance wise. A bunch of good teams but not great teams. Out of the eight Top 100 A-10 teams on KenPom, only one is Top 50 (St. Louis at #31). Top 50 is traditionally where you get into NCAA at large teams. 50-80 is NIT territory, as it past years the regular season champs in conferences that don’t go to the NCAAs get NIT auto bids, so only 16 or so of the 32 NIT spots are at large.

What great play from Battle, Moyer, Bishop, and Brelsford today. Congrats on the win guys! Moyer had 15 rebounds! Battle 7 rebounds. Bishop 7 assists. Team was 14-18 from the stripe today. Well played guys. UMass at home next, and then our schedule gets really tough. Severe underdogs in the next six games after UMass.

I can’t believe I missed this “good vibe” game yesterday. So I don’t have any insight on it, but we come on here and complain bitterly when the team doesn’t play well, so they deserve all the credit for when they do get a big blowout W on the road. Great way to end 2020, hopefully with a little momentum. It is only one data point against the worst (or second worst) team in the A-10, but have any “addition by subtraction” theories floated around yet with the team’s minutes and clearer, more defined roles driving the result?

Let’s hope they turn it around soon, otherwise we will be having the debate over whether they are the worst team in GW men’s bball history. Right now I’ve got them at #3, behind the 1-27 team and MoJo’s last team two years ago.

BM is onto something interesting posting about the KenPom Luck metric. My understanding is it not actually a measure of luck (losing out on 50/50 balls, failing to convert two chances to win on the last possession with the ball in your hands, etc). It is actually a measurement of the performance of each team relative to his statistical projections (i.e. expectations). And by that measure, we are the next to worst team in Division I in performance vs projected performance. The only team worse than us (and by far) is 1-5 Kentucky, whose season is also an absolute dumpster fire. Also interestingly, #1 in the nation in this measurement is 3-1 Navy, who I guess was supposed to be absolutely terrible but beat us and just recently beat Georgetown on the road. So if you ever wanted to debate performance vs expectations, here is the statistical source to help drive that discussion. We are officially suffering through (and supporting) one of the most disappointing programs in the country out of 357 teams!

Coach confirmed in the post game press conference that he is sitting out the year. Amir Harris is also out for the year with his injury.

OMG, are you kidding me. Don’t even get a shot off. I actually thought we were going to commit a five second violation because Bishop let himself get trapped on the sideline. I can’t even imagine what that locker room is like right now.

What happened to the post from Mentz on here? Was that real or was satire or something?

Prior to coming to GW, Coach Christian never won a game against a top-100 KenPom school. He was 0-30 combined at MSM and Siena. Here at GW, he is 2-9, all last year, the two wins being the 4-OT game vs #70 Davidson and a win at #95 Duquesne.

Hi BC, I believe you have to add the percentage of winning for each game remaining on the schedule and divide it by 100. So in GW’s case that is 397 / 100 = 3.97, or four more wins. Basically the theory is, even though they are not projected to win any individual game remaining, in reality that is not how it will play out. There are enough close game opportunities (between 30-70%) where a couple of them will bounce GW’s way.

Thank you for posting GW0509! Well, at least Coach isn’t sugar coating the poor result and the disappointment. He is still saying all the right things.

Out of the top eight ranked conferences in college hoops to date (the six power conferences, AAC at #7, and A10 at #8), there are 101 teams. We are ranked dead last of those teams in KenPom at 241. The next worst team is Tulane at 211.
in addition, Coach Christian in his nine year career has never coached a team with a KenPom final ranking better than 200. He got to 209 twice with Mount St. Mary’s, which coincidentally is currently sitting directly above us with a 240 KenPom ranking.

Because I graduated from here, that’s really the only reason Mentz. We’ve hit rock bottom. My wife’s side is Seton Hall. Thank God for The Hall right now.

MG14, I was generously assuming that they somehow pull it together and win 3-4 of the home games. Also going off of KenPom. Coach Christian has to know this is a worst case scenario playing out right now. When you have a program with the history of GW, and the starting point for your improvement from 2019-20 is KenPom #240, you better show some improvement!

Do we think they let Coach Christian go if the team winds up having, say, a 5-20 or a 6-19 season? I can only hope they pull together as a team. They are not playing together and it is beyond painful. I’m tuning in as a die hard fan but you are going to see some frustrated posting on this board if we’re going to watch another 20 games like this.
