Watching the Sun Bowl with ND and Oregon State--and not once have the announcers mentioned the 1957 Sun Bowl Champs, the AP # 17 team in the nation.  That is an insult!

Nice Barry, good response to an asymetrical situation. (sp. I know)

GW Men's Hoops » New Rev Logos » 8/16/2023 9:24 pm

Dull logos, lifeless and hard to fit on a ball cap.  And the monument should stand out more, larger, different color etc.

I remember Joe lalli  and Terry Grefe and lots of others,  and have a vague memory of Dave S. (Ft. Myer etc.).
GWU '69.

Great games, especially for me to see SDSU (second alma mater) beat the #1 seed and #1 "ick" program.

I too am irritated at the change from Colonials, particular the reasoning, and now the overly "big brother" guidance on what the name should be.  I suppose "Buff and Blue" is the best so far, however I am sure there is a slightly depressed nudist out there who will be offended.  Off Topic: To Class 'o 70, my fraternity house next to Quigleys' was also razed (PSK).  Class of '69.

And ranked 19th in the nation.  (Cynical side note---next program to be cut)( nervously joking).

GW Foggy Bottoms.  Then have Charmin TP as a sponsor for NIL dollars.

Local San Diego paper finally mentioned GW after many years, noted the name change in a column titled "Off the Wall."  So appropriate

GW Other Sports » Rowing Championship » 5/22/2022 3:32 pm

GW's men's first varsity and second varsity 8s won their respective championships at the ACRA National Championship Regatta this weekend in Oak Ridge TN.   GW finished the year as the number 1 ranked ACRA team.  In the Grand Final the first varsity  beat Notre Dame, UCLA, Michigan, Purdue, and UC Irvine.  The 2nd varsity knocked off Purdue, ND, Michigan, UVA,  and Bucknell.  Not bad for a former IRA and now club team.  Here's hoping the powers that be reinstate rowing as a varsity sport, although not holding my breath.  Rowing attracts some pretty solid student-athletes.

Let's just drop men's basketball  and add back men's rowing, coed sailing, and squash.  National rankings in all three, a hell of a lot stressful for all of us, and  a lot cheaper.  Yes, less opportunity for acidic comment and debate but we can go into the future calmer and live longer.

I will be there, the old white guy with no hair and a happy wife staying at home.  Also, camped out near the food with a GW Sailing cap.

GW Men's Hoops » Coming season prediction-- before practice begins » 9/23/2021 10:05 am

One small comment on the GW 73 '21 prediction from a strong emotional supporter of GW basketball, but one with shallow knowledge.  UCSD may be a W vice an L.  The Tritons only entered DIV 1 earlier this year and ended  at the bottom of the league against a patty cake schedule.

GW Other Sports » Rowing » 5/31/2021 6:00 pm

I am still grumbling about dropping Rowing and Sailing.  Both have  been growing in recognition and success, and graduate students any university would be proud of.  Talked to a couple of GW rowers recently who are from San Diego and work out at the San Diego Rowing Club (where I row) and they are devastated/surprised.  They were still fuzzy on the reason, but assume it is the dollars spent on non-revenue sports.  Pissed in San Diego.

Nobody talking about the SDSU Aztecs on GW board, suspect Syracuse is not either.  I've go $ on Monty Montezuma  and not just because they are the hometown team.  I  recall GW beating them in the NIT year and was very happy of course.

Hell, dump basketball and bring back men's rowing and coed sailing--at least we were nationally ranked at times.

And we gave up rowing, sailing and other sports with national rankings for this.  Nice work.

GW Men's Hoops » GW Axing 7 teams after this year » 8/01/2020 11:36 am

The cuts are a gut punch for me as well.   The dollars I have spent over the years for GW sports contributions have all been for rowing and more recently sailing.  My focus was the product of these sports, true student athletes most of whom would never be a "professional " other than in non-athletic fields.  As a current Master's Rower with the large and old San Diego Rowing Club I am still amazed at the number of rowers who are MDs, biotech researchers, attorneys, engineers, naval architects etc.  I often row in a quad with 3 doctors.  And I am amazed at the number of them who went to the Ivy League schools (every school represented) as well as Stanford, Cal, USC, UCLA, Washington etc.  (even the school down the street).  Yes, there are many factors for this concentration in one organization and location, however I alway hoped that GW would be represented more strongly at this level as well.  Again, the product of the school and these types  of student-athletes has alway been paramount,  thus my concern that this is not a good move.  Having said that I have no solution from this distance,  nor any experience to contribute and therefore feel even more like shit.  Would I like consistent NCAA appearances in basketball---of course---but not sure in the long run we are taking that direction, NOR attracting student athletes who will contribute even stronger to our rep.  Time for a double-shot of Red Breast irish.

General Discussion » Stanford » 7/08/2020 3:13 pm

The Cardinal will drop 11 Div 1 sports, including men's rowing and all sailing.  Football will stay--I was worried

GW Other Sports » Sailing » 9/09/2019 9:18 am

And  Sailing won the Riley Cup at Old Dominion, first out of 18.  Nice start.  Women finished middle of the pack at Navy.

GW Water Polo (nationally ranked) off to good start, 4-0 after Left Coast swing.
