The only takeaway from the game is that it doesn't matter who GW plays. The way the game transpires will remain the same lol. Maybe that's why we're 11th in consistency via Haslametrics, which measures how easy it is to predict the outcome of a game a team plays in. 11 points through 10 minutes, then 91 in 30. The latter is honestly very impressive regardless of competition. While I was never worried about how this game was going to go (outside of Dean making floaters Wise didn't do much well) taking a quarter of the game to get going will hurt the team once conference play comes around. This team needs to come out ready to play. GW has played a very weak schedule, but currently leads all A10 teams in steals per game. Hope that can hold up to an extent in A10 play.
I echo what other people say about Nessah. He seems to play the right way and make an impact whenever he's on the floor. The thing with Jacoi is that he was never a consistent shooter in HS (he was a great passer, but I think his shooting scared the high majors off), so I was surprised by his first year shooting performance. Regardless, a down year from 3 shouldn't impact his ability to finish inside. Prior to this game, outside of Dayan (who had limited attempts) Hutch was the only player on the team shooting under 40% from the field overall. At times, he could maybe take an extra step before attempting a layup as he tends to jump a bit early which hurts his balance/finishing ability (maybe just my imagination). Also like LSF's mention of Arrington. Now 2-2 from deep on the season, and halfway to tying Jun's total for the year despite taking 23 fewer shots and appearing in just 3 contests.
Overall, my thoughts now that the OOC slate is complete is that we have the frontcourt to be competitive (Sean will have to hold up defensively and the staff will have to be more creative with how they use Jun) but the guards are not dynamic nor consistent enough (finishing/creating their own shot) to be more than a

WBB hit 70 points and won the game. The team had 16 assists and moved the ball very well. They also got to the line a lot and made the FTs. Hampton is one of the 50 worst teams in the country (they had a play where they inbounded the ball and then the player threw the ball back to the player standing out of bounds - that is definitely a contender for funniest play I've ever seen in a CBB game) but it was a solid performance. I also saw some attempts to intentionally give Andrews some midrange shots which was nice. Mott and Planes Fortuny dominated Hampton's frontline.
I really wanted to leave it at that and celebrate the performance, but then the last seven minutes happened. I continue to wonder why every team doesn't keep pressing GW for 40 minutes. WBB has no clue how to break a press properly. That's a bad combination when the defense doesn't force too many turnovers on the other end. Multiple times during that final stretch where two players are standing in the same place and run into each other. They run towards the sidelines when bringing up the ball which is exactly what Hampton wanted. At least McCombs called timeout one of the times which is an improvement over previous games. Having said that, there was also one play where she called timeout but GW did not advance the ball. I get that you want the team to learn, but a 4 point game is not when you want to have the team learn.
Parnell looks like she can shoot which provides some optimism moving forward. Lewis had a big bucket on a drive late, but her jump shot is very flat resulting in her hitting the front rim on many jumpers. As xAC mentioned, Andrews and Reynolds have struggled with turnovers. Gabby is just a freshman so she gets a bit of a pass. Makayla needs to be a bit better there - about 2-3 times every game she gets the ball swiped from her which shouldn't be the case for a senior.
Overall, I think conference play comes down to whether GW can continue to not only move the ball, but get to the FT

I'm convinced McCombs just picks names out of a hat when determining the rotation for a game. Player availability has also always been a huge mystery.
I did actually see some promise with the ball movement (and FTs) but this team still couldn't even hit 50 points. Just completely inept offensively. Not convinced that this group being together another couple of years will suddenly turn them into competent scorers. Miami (OH) is barely rated as an average team (170th). 30 point difference when it comes to made threes between the two squads. Night and day difference. Defense is supposed to be the calling card, and this unit isn't even average nationally there either. Again, how the heck did this team put up 70 against Delaware? Maybe Lipitz should bring in UIC's WBB coach. They aren't very good defensively but it seems like they can score and are around 150th on Bart Torvik. GW is down to 240th after the loss.
Also, FIU's court design is cool, but I wonder how often teams turn the ball over by stepping on the sideline on the water side of the court. It seems so hard to see where the line is.

Seems like the Doug Gottlieb experiment is unsurprisingly not going too well at UWGB. The Phoenix lost to D2 Michigan Tech yesterday. If Anthony Roy wasn't on the team (and he is at that level only because of issues off the court) Green Bay might be winless on the year.
Bethune-Cookman upset South Florida by 8. Bray had 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists for the Wildcats.
Good on Alabama for playing at North Dakota. That's what makes CBB so great. Treysen Eaglestaff just earned himself a big payday for his 40 point performance last night
Oklahoma lucked out in their win over Michigan to stay undefeated as Fears was fouled on a made three in the closing seconds. The Sooners are good, but I'm still not fully buying that they can keep playing at this level the rest of the way.
Georgetown beating Creighton by 24 really surprised me. Sorber is a really good player. I think it may be more of a sign that Creighton is just not very good than Georgetown being good but the Hoyas are certainly improved.
In A10 action, La Salle slipped by FDU by 5. The Explorers have a freshman in Deuce Jones who seems to have had a great year thus far.
Temple edged Davidson by 1. Boy would that be a fun conference matchup in the future (although I know TU is never going to come back). The Owls won on an Elijah Gray bucket. Gray was at Fordham last year. It was also Temple's 2000th program win.
Richmond continues to disappoint, falling to William & Mary by 6 on the road. Neither team could get any stops apparently.
UMass beat Northeastern 77-72. The Minutemen probably could have won by more if they did better at the FT line.
St. Joe's easily defeated American 84-57. Lincoln Ball started, but went 0-6 from the field. The Hawks were without X Brown. GW could not have played worse against AU. Hopefully it's the worst performance of the year for the Revs.
SLU lost to Wofford at home 74-71. Honestly, Wofford is not that bad of a squad but SLU has very much underperformed. They seem to ha

I agree with LSF that this was one of the better performances of the year. Outside of a few minute stretch in the first half where it seemed like the team was starting to let the missed shots on offense affect the way they guard, the defense was pretty good throughout the game. Double teaming their ball handler along the perimeter/allowing open looks from the midrange rather than distance was very effective since Lafayette hasn't shown to be particularly competent from inside the arc.
PKGW wrote:

I really appreciate it! I also agree 100% with your post. It may be picking nits, but if there was a disappointment with the defense (outside of those two runs Lafayette had) it was that Chaikin was allowed to take too many shots last night. He shot 3/6 from 3 last night and his percentage for the season is actually going to go down. His near 60% 3 point shooting wasn't on some fluke small sample size, he had taken 41 threes through 10 games. Dare Butler to shoot the 3/take shots instead.
I also like GWMayhem's mention (thanks for the shoutout on the preview as well!) about the balance of the team. In previous years, this team went as JB goes. That's not the case this year. Jun took just four shots last night. On a side note, I also have to mention that there was no need for his T in the first half - always let out your emotion to the crowd or look away when doing it, not the opponent's bench. Jun didn't have to "run it up the middle" which is what I'm going to use to describe his move to the basket from the top of the key. Yet, the team put up 82 points. Lafayette is by no means a juggernaut defensively, but they aren't awful either.

2024-25 Projected Record: 16-15, 10-8 (T-2nd in Patriot)
Head-to-Head: 1-2. These teams haven't faced each other too often. 45 years passed between the first and second meetings, and another 44 years went by before we faced the Leopards for a third time. The first matchup came back in 1925-26, when Lafayette won 24-22. They also came out on top in 1971, which was part of the Garden State Classic in Trenton. GW finally got on the board in 2015, notching an 85-76 win at the Smith Center.
In that matchup, GW pulled a reverse Caputo. They outscored Lafayette by 22 points, putting up a 50 spot on the Leopards before halftime. The script nearly reversed after halftime. I feel like every time I've recapped the last meeting of an OOC opponent, I say GW shot poorly from 3, and that was the case again for this game. The Buff and Blue went a dismal 2/17 from deep, with Pato accounting for both makes. Ultimately, GW held a significant advantage on the boards (50-32) and assists (13-9). Despite the final score, GW was in the driver's seat going into the final media timeout with an 18 point lead. Unfortunately, they did not make a field goal the rest of the way (the final eight points all came via FTs). The two teams took 14 free throws in the final one minute and two seconds of the game.
Four GW players finished in double figures. KevLar (24 points, 11 rebounds) and TyCav (15 points, 17 rebounds) both posted double doubles. Could Jun and Rafael follow suit tomorrow? Pato (17 points) and Paul Jorgensen (10 points off the bench) also

American was inexperienced and not very strong inside and it showed. Still, it was a win and a decent effort overall. Just 8 turnovers should definitely be celebrated. Also, the team crossed the 60 point mark (that is an accomplishment under McCombs). At times, good shots were taken. I was impressed with Matthews again and Loving gave good minutes.
Unfortunately the team only had 8 assists, which reflects the problems I have with the McCombs offense. The players on the court have to put in so much effort to get a good quality shot. There's never any cutting, and rarely do players move off ball. Andrews is automatic from the midrange. How about setting a screen to free her up? Or run a play to get Planes Fortuny going down low/maybe a pick and pop behind the arc? There is talent here, but it could be maximized better. As bad as American was, they ran some nice plays. The give-and-go burned GW a few times but thankfully they are not very good so they missed on some chances.
At the end of the day, the biggest problem is this team just cannot shoot. WBB entered the game bottom 40 nationally in 3P%, and may be bottom 20 by the end of the night. FT shooting was also bad. This may be the worst shooting GW squad in a very long time. Engel is a good shooter in concept, but is just 5/28 on the year. Sims and Lewis also under 30%. I like the energy Sierra-Vargas has been bringing, but the fact that she is starting says a lot about the team right now. She has done a lot well, but please don't have her shoot threes.

Some recent performances by former GW players:
- Bray is averaging 16.3 ppg in his last three games for Bethune-Cookman (they faced Minnesota, Virginia, and West Virginia). I only saw a bit of the UVA game. It took the Cavs 32 minutes before they were able to create any separation. I'm sure their fans can't wait to begin a new era where they actually get to see faster paced offense. The ACC isn't very good. It's hard to say whether VT or UVA is worse this year.
- Noel Brown had 16 points and 8 rebounds for the Bonnies in their win against Providence. Kim English still sucks against A10 competition. You never want a player to transfer to a rival but Noel was the one case where the fit seemed so good that I couldn't get too upset. Bona just does a great job with bigs.
- JoeBam had 25 points and 9 rebounds for VCU in a good win over Colorado State. CSU is a bit down this year in the Mountain West, and I wonder if Niko Medved gets a look at the Minnesota this offseason. VCU's offense has struggled at times to put the ball in the basket, so Bamisile being around to give them a bit of juice has been big for them.
As for Max, I find his situation a bit similar to Bray's. On a team at the A10 level, both players are better served as third or fourth options like they were in their first year at GW. Edwards came into last season as the expected #2 option on the team and I think that was just too big of an ask. URI and Duquesne were expecting both players to be primary options which they just aren't if you're expecting decent efficiency. As for the fit, Duquesne plays too slow for Max's style and runs an offense that doesn't make any sense. Their offense looks like a game of pickup basketball. Defensively, I think they are actually okay.
In other news, UAB blew a 27 point lead yesterday and eventually lost to Arkansas State in overtime. ASU is pretty good, but UAB is representative of a really down AAC this year. I think the fact that they finished 7th in our MTE probably

Anyways, back to the game. Honestly, there's not too much to say. It feels like I've watched the same game 11 times now. Sleepwalking to start, then turn it on in the last ten minutes or so of the game. If I were to hand out player grades for just the first ten minutes, everyone not named Trey Moss and Dayan Nessah would have been given an F (Sean did try to drive once so maybe a slightly higher grade for him).
CC has said GW is a "good shooting team, but not a great one" yet nearly 60% of our attempts come from there? Army is the third shortest team in the country and came into the game 341st on defense. The fact that GW struggled to break their zone at all and instead just passed the ball around the perimeter before jacking up a three was mind-boggling and in general, terrible offense. Trey Moss making threes was nice, but it's specifically his penetration ability that this team really needs (and why I haven't really been as down on him as others). It also makes him a threat as a passer, where he nearly eclipsed his assist total for the season in just one game. Jacoi and Autry don't do that nearly as much (although Autry will occasionally cut off ball, which earned him 2 FTs yesterday). That's the thing - there's too much standing around by others in the halfcourt who don't have the ball. I really liked Dayan's minutes (good to see him back!), partly because he actually looked to drive to the basket. His field goal attempt spun out but it was a good look and he made both his FTs.
Every game, it takes activity on defense late for GW to finally get out in transition when they are at their best. Unsurprisingly, even the threes taken after halftime were better quality looks. CC has not yet found a solution for the slow starts.
I'm glad Abe mentioned Jun in the postgame. CC seems to understand that DBJ needs to be given the ball at different parts of the court, yet that hasn't happened the past several games. Buchanan spent way too much time along the perimeter befo

I've gotten over the return of ROTC to campus after we kicked them out during my student years. Good on GW and Caputo for this scheduling.
I appreciate this sentiment (as well as the thoughts of others on this), and don't disagree at all with the overall experience of playing at West Point. However, being in a conference like the A10 means that there's not much margin for error in terms of maximizing bids.
Heading into year 4 under CC, GW should start to care about their NET rankings not only for their own postseason aspirations, but also to help the top teams get more quality opportunities. I'm sure we'll have a fair number of Q4 opportunities at home. It's tough to win on the road regardless of opponent, so why potentially tank your NET by risking playing a Q4 game on the road? Without Rucker, it seems unlikely that Army will be Q3 even facing them on the road. At least the AU game snuck into Q3 since AU is top 240 in the NET (I probably should have been more critical of playing at ODU this year in the original post). The fact that American is local also makes it a somewhat different conversation. CC has 13 OOC games to work with. Most will likely be easier games at home. Outside of the MTE, that leaves 2 or maybe 3 chances to somewhat challenge yourself. The home and home is a great opportunity to do so.
If the next wave of realignment makes the A10 a guaranteed one-bid league, then all this becomes moot and who GW plays and where becomes irrelevant.

It's stuff like this where I agree with others about the scheduling. Even JC's decision to do a home and home with Radford is better than this (and that says a lot).
Hofstra? They've been decent so I get it. ODU? They were expected to be bad this year, but maybe there's some upside for next year when they return to the Smith Center. American? Even before we lost at their place I'll admit that I didn't love that we were playing them home and home because the reward for winning at their place was low and risk for losing was high. However, at least they are a local opponent which makes it somewhat okay.
A home and home against Army though? Why do another Patriot League team where again the risk of playing them at their place is high and the reward is low (even if Rucker is gone after this season). Unlike American, there isn't even a local factor. I don't believe that CC couldn't find a team (even a bottom feeder at this point) in a comparable conference to the A10 to play a home and home with. For someone who likes to avoid landmines at home, CC is certainly risking it with these home and homes this year. You might as well go for it for the 2 or so home and homes in the OOC schedule.

The 1997 matchup was at a neutral site in Fairfax, VA as part of the US Airways Holiday Classic. In the most recent clash back in 2015, GW won 92-81. The Buff and Blue struggled from distance, shooting just 4/16 from 3 compared to Army's blazing 12/28 (43%) mark. The difference came from inside the arc, as GW made 60% of their two point attempts and had a +17 advantage on made free throws, offsetting a 20 assist performance by the Black Knights.

I agree, but during that time McCombs should have been looking to the future given the low ceiling of the returners. Outside of Robertson, which freshmen were being developed? Starting to do so in year 4 is a bit late. There should already be a sustainable culture built at this point.
xAC wrote:

If we are going off potential I agree 100% based on the team personnel. However, the analytics don't seem to match that. Torvik has GW ranked around the same offensively. The offensive efficiency is actually lower than last year but it's early.
xAC makes a lot of good points about the recruiting. For 1), I don't know if the problem is with the Durant/Mott/Planes Fortuny group or the coaching staff getting them the ball. Half of Durant's year was wasted because McCombs couldn't realize that she can't share the floor with Taiwo. Mott/Planes Fortuny were fairly accomplished players prior to GW. I'm not sure how much better WBB could have done in the portal. Even players like Loving have actually looked pretty good on the court this year but between random rotations leading to inconsistent playing time and not consistently getting them the ball they haven't been able to play to their ability. Parnell may suddenly get 20 minutes against AU, play well, and then disappear for the following several games. This falls on the staff.
As for 2), I definitely think a true point guard could serve this team well, however based on the system that McCombs runs, it doesn't really require a true playmaker with all the dribble handoffs. The execution could definitely be better. Whitney had some moments a few years ago a

Same old story. WBB was better with the turnovers ("only" 19 turnovers in regulation, fewer were outright awful) and there were some nice moments moving the ball. Coppin WBB isn't terrible like their MBB team is but this is still a game that shouldn't be lost at home. 12 total free throw attempts isn't going to get it done.
One moment that stands out is the possession at the end of the first quarter. About a two second difference between shot clock and game clock. Most teams would be running the clock down before making a move late. Yet, GW is running the offense early in the possession and turns it over, giving Coppin a good look for a final shot. On top of that, the team failed to box out with less than a second left and gave CSU two FTs. In a close game, that makes all the difference.
It just feels like McCombs is throwing things at a wall to see what sticks. What is this rotation?? Natalia Sierra-Vargas was a real bright spot - pesky on defense and looking up the court to try and move the offense. The fact that a walk-on is outplaying the scholarship players (even if some are young) is not good though. After the game Matthews had against Mason, five minutes and zero shot attempts. I'm convinced at this point that even with the transfers, McCombs is making them worse given how they performed at their previous spots. Did Makayla get hurt or is she in the doghouse after playing just 15 minutes? She tends to have her pocket picked at times when dribbling but as one of the few players on the team who can actually make a shot consistently (the midrange) she needs to be on the court as much as possible. Calisto also only 5 minutes today. There is no rhyme or reason for anything McCombs does. How can players get into a rhythm with random rotations? Nothing wrong with going deeper but it has to make sense.

Some random thoughts based on yesterday:
- This is now three straight games where the team has shot under 70% from the FT line. Since GW is one of the most FT reliant teams in the country, they need to be more consistent converting the free shots moving forward. They were pretty good before that, so not sure if it is just adjusting to being on the road.
- I'm not sure why this team has to struggle against full-court pressure before CC emphasizes it in practice (not saying they haven't already, but GW looked unprepared). Yes, the team is different from the Maryland Eastern Shore game from two years ago but it feels like CC hasn't adjusted from that game. One pass along the sidelines and a long pass that wasn't well executed. Luckily, ODU didn't really make GW pay for the poor passes but seriously every CBB team should run that football play in every late game situation when the game is within two possessions. I've yet to see it fail.
- Coming into the game, we knew both Durugordon and Walker were strong rebounders. The fact that nobody put a body on them and boxed them out was a major red flag. The defensive rebounding was horrendous, although better after halftime.
- Defensively, I do think this GW team is a bit tougher, however guarding penetration continues to be a major issue. Too many times yesterday ODU just coasted to the rim without much resistance.
- Jacoi and Rafael have no chemistry on the court whatsoever. The start of the ODU game was no different from the AU one. Hutchinson threw the ball at Castro's legs on one play before he was even ready to accept the ball, and on another tried to lob a pass to him in traffic that had no chance of being made.
- Speaking of Jacoi, he should not be taking ten shots in a game he's having a tough time making shots. Unfortunately, the way he is shooting the 3 so far this year is what I thought we'd see when he entered the college ranks as that was not a strength of his when I watched his HS games. Hopefully it's jus

Old Dominion Monarchs
Date: Saturday December 7th, 2024
Time: 4:00 PM ET
Venue: Chartway Arena (Norfolk, VA)
TV: ESPN+
Ranks: 328th (KenPom), 310th (Bart Torvik), 346th (Haslametrics), 330th (EvanMiya), 233rd (Sports Illustrated)
2023-24 Record: 7-25, 3-15 (14th in Sun Belt)
2024-25 Projected Record: 10-20, 5-13 (13th in Sun Belt)
Head-to-Head: 8-5, although Old Dominion has won the past two matchups (sounds eerily similar to the AU series). This will be the first matchup against the Monarchs since 2003, which was also on the road. It just so happened that GW would play at AU later the same season. In the most recent tilt, ODU came out on top 72-62. That Monarch team finished #101 on KenPom and went 17-12 overall. The biggest issue for GW during the game was turnovers, as they coughed up the ball 22 times. Despite that, they went into halftime with a slim one point lead. Sadly, ODU could not miss after the break, making nearly 60% of their shots, and nailing 6/8 shots from distance. GW meanwhile shot just 35% from the field and did not make any threes in the second period.
Pops led the team in scoring with 17 points (and 6 rebounds). Ricky Lucas added 15 points, and Omar Williams pitched in 11 points and 7 rebounds of his own. Somehow Mike Hall did his best Sean Hansen impersonation and only took one shot in 26 minutes of action.
Offensive Efficiency: 319th (KenPom), 269th (Bart Torvik), 336th (Haslametrics), 329th (EvanMiya)
Defensive Efficiency: 304th (KenPom), 319th (Bart Torvik), 330th (Haslametrics), 305th (EvanMiya)
Pace: 128th (KenPom), 113th (Bart Torvik), 133rd (Haslam

One of those losses that keeps you up at night. I guess we were due for a W against American until we weren't...
I thought the defense was pretty good. Double teaming Rogers was effective, especially in the second half where GW finally sped AU up and turned them over a bunch of times. The fact that GW actually had a chance to win despite shooting terribly from the line and making 0 threes could be a glass half full way of thinking I guess. The D slipped in overtime as a young GW team failed to reset but for most of the game it was good (a couple times shooters were lost, but it wasn't overly often). At the very least, a good experience moving forward. Sadly, AU had a 33 point advantage just from threes.
The focus should be on offense. CC needs to address these slow starts. The Revs average 9.5 ppg more after halftime than before, and this is the fourth time in nine games they've failed to hit even 30 points before the half (only the KSU game should be excused given the schedule). I think the game plan coming in was sound in terms of getting out in transition and making AU run. However, the execution was atrocious and the team was super tight to start. There were at least five if not more transition plays that could not have be executed worse. Like 3-on-1 plays that should be guarantee scores.
GW was coming off a 25 assist game against VMI, but so many of those plays against the Keydets were one pass assists because they were abysmal defensively. In the presser that GW0509 posted, CC mentioned that AU is very good at taking away the three and preventing teams from moving the ball from side to side. That's true to a degree, however the Revs are way too predictable in the halfcourt. Give Jun the ball and hope that he can finish over multiple defenders or draw a foul and somehow make multiple FTs. Where is the passing?? The best offensive sequence came when GW actually moved the ball around the horn and Jacoi made a beautiful floater.
There's simply too much of an a

American Eagles
Date: Wednesday December 4th, 2024
Time: 7:00 PM ET
Venue: Bender Arena (Washington, DC)
TV: ESPN+
Ranks: 239th (KenPom), 228th (Bart Torvik), 265th (Haslametrics), 237th (EvanMiya), 239th (Sports Illustrated)
2023-24 Record: 16-16, 10-8 (T-2nd in Patriot)
2024-25 Projected Record: 16-15, 10-8 (T-1st in Patriot)
Head-to-Head: 21-26, and the Eagles have won the past two meetings (by a combined seven points - they won at the buzzer back in 2019, spoiling a monster 20 point, 24 rebound performance from Toro). Neither team has shot the ball great from deep in the past couple of matchups. The Revs have gone a combined 14/53 from distance (26%) in those games, while AU was 12/42 (29%). It would definitely help if the team could continue its recent shot making from deep on Wednesday. This will be the first meeting at AU since 2003, when the Eagles won 81-75.
In the last meeting back in 2022, GW trailed at the half by six but had multiple chances down the stretch to potentially send the game to overtime. Amir Harris came up with three steals in the last couple of minutes, but GW only cashed in on one of those extra possessions. BA missed a three with 43 seconds left down 4, and Amir later missed a layup with GW down 3. Ricky finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds, JB added 14 points and 7 assists, and BA had 12 points. Of course, the last matchup also featured a memorable moment when a dog performing during the halftime show ran onto the court early in the first half (the audio fluctuations add to the entertainment):
Offensive Efficiency: 182nd (KenPom), 170th (Bart Torvik), 201st (Haslametrics), 172nd (EvanMiya)
Defensive Efficiency: 301st (KenPom), 304th (Bart Torvik), 338th (Haslametrics), 312th (Eva

A pathetic performance on the home court. GW should never be losing to anyone in conference at home by 30+. I would have been surprised if this was a W, but I expected them to at least keep it respectable...
This game was pretty much over after the first few minutes. One team finished with 7 assists to 21 turnovers. The other had 19 assists to 9 turnovers. Can you guess who was who?? No improvement in taking care of the ball, as the team couldn't even catch a pass. The defense was as horrendous if not worse. No one seemed to bother to guard anyone along the perimeter. Even when GMU missed, they out-hustled GW on the boards. A sequence in the second quarter out of the media timeout sticks out. GW couldn't bother to run back on D, leaving GMU wide open from the corner twice. Luckily, they only made one of those.
Mason was getting out in transition, whether that was picking off lazy passes from GW or running off misses. Maybe GW should try that sometime! Meanwhile McCombs tries to slow it down as much as possible, which doesn't work when you play against a team that's competent offensively. GW never turns anyone over, which is a bigger problem when you can't get stops. Also, you can't get away with having no shooting - the Patriots made 3x the number of threes as GW.
Matthews was a real bright spot. Maybe a floor stretcher moving forward? Unfortunately, WBB needs more than just one player. Andrews making some midrange shots was cool too.
Also, Mason's coach is an ass. I've said this every time we've played them on the WBB side since she's become the HC there but somehow it gets worse each time. Taking a shot with the shot clock off up 30 doesn't sit right with me. Some may disagree and I get the whole thing with NET metrics, but I hope GMU fails the rest of the way. I don't usually have ill will for GMU in general but if I was GW I would have fouled the player that took the final shot hard.
