Tragic -- and she was a Colonial too (the other one). Jimmy really gutted out doing the Fri game.

Yes, he did. He also scored the last two US points in the infamous final game of the 1972 Olympics -- two free throws.

GW Men's Hoops » The Badminton Yuta » 7/24/2021 5:57 pm

Was watching Olympic badminton today (don't ask, although it's a lot different from what we played in our backyards) and one of the Japanese players is Yuta Watanabe. Not our Yuta. Is that like "John Smith" here in the US? Japan won and Yuta is apparently a star. Two Yutas in the Olympics. Who knew?

When I was manager, '71-'72, recall that Texas A&M won the Presidential Classic. Shelby Metcalf was the A&M coach -- very nice guy. But not a great "classic."

Gard also gets criticized all the time about the slow and boring way WI plays. Think our last fast-break basket was in about 2017.

GW Men's Hoops » WIsconsin coach secretly recorded by players » 6/23/2021 12:21 pm

I live in Madison, retired from the UW and am a former season-ticket holder. The Gard story was the front-page headline in today’s local newspaper.

My impression of Gard is that he is not an a-hole. Seemed like a solid and low-key guy. He is also, however, a protégé of Bo Ryan who, by all accounts, was not such a good guy. And resigned suddenly after it was revealed he had an extramarital affair with a massage therapist (I’m not making this up). I recall Frank Kaminsky, when asked what thought about Ryan, saying “he’s mean” (and he didn’t seem to be joking). So, some of that tough love may have rubbed off on Gard.

The AD here, Barry Alvarez, and his successor (Alvarez is retiring) have both come out publicly supporting Gard. Trying to shift the conversation away from what the players said to how disappointed they are that the meeting was recorded, and the recording was leaked. However, only 37 minutes of the two-hour meeting was leaked. Some players said that Gard responded with empathy to what the players said.

Fans here are impatient, and some were already disgruntled about last year’s performance, given all the hype about the team and its maturity. The Kobe King departure was a big mystery -- as was the apparent firing of Alando Tucker. It appears that Howard Moore will not be returning.

Of the seven seniors who could have returned next year, only one will be coming back.

So, we’ll see what happens. I think this story will have some leg here in WI.

I think you can argue that Coach K is the most successful men's college coach ever, even compared to John Wooden, for the following two reasons:

-- For 8 of UCLA’s 10 championships, it only had to win four tournament games. In other words, getting to the final four today takes the same number of wins it took UCLA to win 8 of those national championships. Krzyzewski has taken Duke to 12 final fours.

--
It’s no longer possible to stockpile players like UCLA did. For example, Swen Nater sat on the bench at UCLA as Bill Walton’s backup, hardly ever playing, and then went on to 13-year ABA and NBA career. Can you imagine a college player sitting like that in today’s environment? I can’t.

This is not to minimize Wooden’s extraordinary accomplishments. His book “Practical Modern Basketball” is on my bookshelf. One anecdote about Wooden I like is when he told Walton he had to get a haircut. Walton asked what would happen if he didn’t and Wooden famously said, “We’ll miss you, Bill.” Nice.

Hurts my heart to see the clips from the NIT championship - what a good team that was.

GW Men's Hoops » 2021 Offseason Transfers » 3/25/2021 7:20 pm

Press here in Madison reporting that WI interested in Battle, as is MN. Battle works out offseason in the Twin Cities with one of the WI players. Looks like only two key WI players returning so a lot of holes. Coach here runs a highly structured offense with a lot of screening, passing and 3s.

GW Men's Hoops » GW vs Fordham A10 Tourney Game Thread » 3/03/2021 6:15 pm

I continue to be frustrated by how poorly we screen and defend against screens. In today's game, if you can't execute the high ball screen or defend it, you're nowhere.

We switch on screens all the time. This creates bad mismatches and/or allows the offense player a clear path to the hoop. If you watch elite teams, you see that they fight over screens or even go under them, but don't switch all the time.

And on offense, we don't set or use screens well.

GW Men's Hoops » GW vs Mason Game Thread » 2/24/2021 7:33 pm

Taken away Bishop and Battle. Too much standing around - we’re easy to guard

GW Men's Hoops » GW vs Mason Game Thread » 2/24/2021 7:05 pm

Need to fight over screens

GW Men's Hoops » Yuta Update » 1/16/2021 5:00 pm

John Holloran and Mike O’Reilly. Especially agree about Mike Battle, a 6’7”:undersized center who had to go up against guys like Artis Gilmore, Kermit Washington and Len Elmore.

Burbee Chick “Big Bur” - nothing better to this day. And whatever happened to all those old guys who used to sit at the bar at Bassin’s 21?

GW Men's Hoops » GW vs Duquesne Game 2 Thread » 1/03/2021 4:57 pm

Say what you want about Bishop and his ball dominance, but he wants the ball in clutch situations. Need a guy like that.

GW Men's Hoops » GW vs Duquesne Game 2 Thread » 1/03/2021 2:34 pm

Much better today but next time we don’t bite on a ball fake will be the first time. At least much more aggressive today.

GW Men's Hoops » GW vs Duquesne Game Thread » 1/02/2021 2:37 pm

My cyclical take on the Nelson and Jack transfers: the two guys most frustrated by Bishop’s ball and shot dominance are now gone.

GW Men's Hoops » GW vs Duquesne Game Thread » 1/02/2021 2:35 pm

We did not defend their screening action well (poor rotations when we double teamed)

They defended our screening action well (Bishop needs to pass out of the double team much better)

We continue to be disinterested in 50/50 balls (long rebounds and balls on the floor)

And, of course, FTs
